What would really be great is....

blink3times wrote on 7/5/2008, 9:55 AM
A simple NOTE PAD tab within Vegas and the notes are saved with each project save. I can't tell you how many little sticky's I have all over my work station of little reminders with regards to this project and that one... and the other one and.....

A simple little note pad feature that gets saved with each project would sure go a long way to making my work station look a little less cluttered!!

Yes. might be nice if it had an option to record timeline position or time of day, either automatically or with a button.

Blink: How about the FILE>Properties> Summary tab in each Vegas project?
blink3times wrote on 7/5/2008, 10:34 AM
Actually that's not a bad idea. I never thought to use the "comments" section in Summary for simple notes, and I'll take that suggestion and run with it.

It would still be kind of nice though just to have a blank note book pad on a tab.

"Yes. might be nice if it had an option to record timeline position or time of day, either automatically or with a button."

ditto.

Even if the project simply opened EXACTLY as you left it. it would go a long way to solving these little "note" issues.

Though it's not documented and not quite what you want, Ctrl-Alt-0 will add a script editor tab to the main docking area. It's meant to be used for writing scripts, obviously, but you can save to any old text file. So it won't be saved with the project exactly. But at least it could be used as a nice scratchpad integrated into the Vegas interface.

That would be a nice feature.

I use regions and marks to leave note on the timeline, but it gets a little clutered and you have to zoom in to read them.

That feature would also be nice if you were writing narration as you edited. Going back and forth to wordpad or whatever isn't too bad, but you have to leave Vegas and save it separately.

A little OT but what would be really really great is a spell checker in the text editor and ProType Titler.
GlennChan wrote on 7/5/2008, 2:05 PM
A spell checker might be helpful, but I don't think it solves your spelling problems fully as they don't work 100%. If you have typos that spell correctly, it's not the kind of thing caught by a spell checker.

You need to be reading the text anyways. Then again, many credits for TV and films have a lot of misspelled names.

Slightly OT here but a true story:

Many years ago I installed accounting systems in a far away country.

One morning a new customer was pretty angry when I met in his office: "Now your damned computer has been on the whole night - and we did put the invoices right in front of its terminal - and look: the dumb thing has not registered one single of them"

:-))

I would LOVE a spell checker!!!

i'm still old school: I have a small pad of paper & sticky notes next to my computer. :D

would love notes in project though. accessible like markers would be awesome. :D

Ppro seems to have had this for years. And you can send off a copy of your rendered work to the client with a viewer. They can pause playback and add comments. You get the file back and can get the comments on your T/L. Saves your client trying to write down time coded notes.

Vegas would need to get a lot of its house in order before features like this were added. You certainly wouldn't want the notes stored in the project file. Putting them in the same folder as the project would be the obvious way however Vegas already has enough trouble remembering where things go.

Nah... I can do that with a simple text file. I would like a notepad right at my fingertips as I open the project... right in one of the tabs, and that pad is unique to each project.... just like the Summary, but a little more convenient
farss wrote on 7/5/2008, 6:25 PM
A link to an external file would be better / safer.
Vegas's project files are binary. Filling them with large amounts of text mightn't be such a grand idea.

Now you've got me thinking. Export the Edit Details to an Excel Spreadsheet and keep a link to the file in the project.

Now that Vegas supports Application Extensions mightn't be too difficult for someone to write these kinds of things.

I put notes in marker labels all the time.

Works great...as long as you have a fairly short note.
DJPadre wrote on 7/5/2008, 7:07 PM
I think having marker points with an option to add "note" (using a seperate txt file) would come in VERY handy.
This way you can have 2 ppl working and communicating on the one project..

at this time, markers DO let u rename (where u can add nots) but its not long enough for specifics

Be careful what you wish for... it may come true ;-)

Yup, I was thinking the same thing when I saw blink's post and since it was raining all day here on the east coast, I thought I would make blink a happy camper.

This is still beta code but I wanted to get it out there for feedback. I still need to add functionality and it really should save itself when the project saves but I'll get to that in time. Right now you press the diskette icon to save updates to the project. Don't forget to save the project after that.

Here's the link to: VASST Notepad which will become part of our Freeware collection when it's complete.

Note: This is a custom command so it only works with Vegas Pro 8.0b or later. Enjoy,

Thanks Johnny, you are an incredibly valuable asset to the Vegas community.

Looks great and thanks.

However I think I'd prefer it to save it as an external rtf file e.g. project-01.rtf
1) Someone might paste an entire 500 page script into there and kind of blow out the project file size.

2) It could then be used to open an existing file. I know, we can do that already in another window but that means Vegas looses focus switching between windows.

Nah. bad idea to embed it with the project file. Better to have a separate text file or even a proprietary file, and just embed an interface to access it within Vegas.

Here's an added value to the separate file. Make it possible to export and import the text file as markers, regions, etc. And make it easy to export all your markers out of the project. That way you can unload one set of markers, regions, comments, and load another set.

I will add this for those of you who don't want to embed the text in the project file. I figure I'll use an RTF file with the same name as the project. This way it can be automatically loaded just like it is now. Same functionality, no bloated veg file.

Ultimate S Pro already has this functionality on the Markers tab. You should try it. It's a handy collection of tools you won't know how you lived without. ;-)

Johnny,
I installed this to try it out... how do I access it within Vegas?
blink3times wrote on 7/6/2008, 8:33 AM
Thanks John.... but I can't seem to bring it up. It shows "error" when I try to run the script:

"System.ApplicationException: Failed to create instance of main class: 'EntryPoint'.

It's not a script... it's a custom command. You access it with:

View > Extensions > VASST Notepad

The readme kind of says this but it needs to be updated to be more explicit. Of course, it will be in the help guide once I write one. ;-)

You only have to open it once. Vegas will remember that it's open and when you start Vegas again it will open it for you. So it will always be there as a dockable window until you close it just like the other tabs in Vegas.
