Whats fun for Hobby-ists in VP9? "features"

I read the list of new features for VP9 and I guess I am a real Hobby-ist because I don't understand in detail what a lot of these features mean
- what "new things" can I do?

I know on a pro level product a lot is about stability and behind the scenes (formats/rendering/bits etc) but except for getting the HF10 AVCHD working well with a regular CPU - I am pretty happy with what I have.

But I am not embarrassed to say I want "cool stuff" - new features that either make my life easier in the normal work-flow .. or being able to do wild new stuff in my video ...

what cool new things can I do with VP9 - that will help us Hobby-ists?
I see ...

--Gradient wipe transition

--Glint, Rays, Defocus, Starburst, Soft Contrast, and Fill Light video effects

--Enhanced user interface with layout presets

--Impressive lighting effects including Glint, Rays, and Fill Light

(and this could be cool)
--Device Explorer for AVCHD and XDCAM EX devices

What else looks like fun?
(in reality I will probably upgrade because I skipped VP8 and need to edit AVCHD)

(NO INSULT AT ALL TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE THE PROS AND NEED ALL THESE FEATURES - I am not criticizing anyone - I just want to know about the options for those of us who are ahead of the Studio crowd - but not real Pros.)
