Whats the best way? Need advice please

Being a newbie I hope someone can give me their tested and solid way to perform what I want to do.
I would like to perform a large capture (ex-more than 4 hours), render the whole thing all at once (using ac3 then mpeg2 with dvd temp), then break it down to edit and burn seperatley with DVDA2 with menus, end credits etc.
Well, after I render the whole file, cut out one of the chunks I want to use ... DVDA2 wont accept the file even if I don'e even edit it. In other words if I try to break up my large V5 rendered file, dvda wont let me bring any pieces in.
The only way I can think to do this is to
1) Capture in V5 (dont render yet)
2) Cut out the part I want, edit it etc -> save as-> "movie1"
3) Then render that piece, bring into dvda to add menus etc
4)Then dvd2 does its render (which takes as long as real time again)
5) Go back to original V5 avi capture file, find new part to cut out and start again
I have tried capturing->rendering-> bringing in to dvda the entire project and using the "in" and "out" points, but then cant add end credits, since cannot cut clips out in dvd2

Basically I am transferring 4+hour vhs tapes with 2-3 movies onto seperate dvds for myself and family, and wonder what would be the best way to do this.
Thanks ... James

You should break the file up in Vegas and then render each portion out, just as you've outlined in your 1..5 steps.

However, DVDA should not be taking that long to create the project, which suggests that it may be recompressing what you've rendered out already - if it is, then you've probably used the wrong template in Vegas when you rendered. Be sure that you specify the DVD Architect NTSC (or PAL) template.

I first render ac3 with default template, then render mpeg2 with ntsc dvda template.
(On another subject) For some reason I keep losing my audio after the mpeg2 render. First I render the ac3, then when finished render the video mpeg2 with dvda template. I answer "yes"(save) when it is asking to replace the name of the existing file I just rendered(ac3) Should I answer "no" dont replace the name and create a new name? wouldn't that give me 2 seperate files?
Thanks for your patience

You should have two separate files with identical names except that one has .ac3 for the extension and the other has .mpg as the extension.

Thats what I had, 2 files ac3 and mpg. Which do I use and open into dvda?

If you drag the mpg file into DVDA, the ac3 file should follow automatically.
