When I render out my 60fps video I can see judder/stutter?

mark1234 wrote on 5/26/2019, 7:49 PM

Hello! I've been recording videos in 60fps mode on my Samsung s8 phone. Playing them back, the motion is smooth.

When adding them in a project in Vegas 16 and exporting, I'm noticing some judder/stutter.

I've uploaded an example clip to Youtube, here's an mp4 straight from my phone and uploaded to Youtube:

And here's the export from Vegas:

You might notice in the export from Vegas clip there's some judder/stutter when I pan past the tree, almost as if the framerate lowers for a moment. The video output is identical using mp4 or hevc, with hardware assisted encoding either on or off.

Does anyone know what the reason is for this? Thank you!

First, make sure you've updated to the latest version of Vegas 16, if the video is variable frame rate, there were some issues that it fixed regarding that... but I don't remember the S8 being vfr...

Try also to "disable resample" in project settings. That can cause unwanted stuttering in the image.

Yes, Samsung S8 recordings are VFR. Disabling resample just can cause unwanted stuttering. Enabling

Resampling smoothes, but will give blurry movements.

@mark1234

Can you upload that short clip somewhere that I can download for testing?

There's a tool in HappyOtterScripts https://tools4vegas.com/ called ImportAssist that may help.

HOS can do both rewrapping and transcoding. If you have VFR footage, there is also an option to rewrap to a constant frame rate. The video is unchanged--only the timecode is altered. I have used this successfully with Samsung Note9 4K 60P footage for elimination of duplicate frames caused by VFR. Here is a link to a demo I did awhile back. https://tools4vegas.com/variable-frame-rate-demo/

The beta period for HOS has been extended to 1 Aug.

They should only be VFR if the camera is in slomo mode, right?

Hello wwaag, sure, here's the file I uploaded to Youtube:

(The download link is on the top left when you hover over the icon)

Let me know if you have any success!

Thank you fr0sty and 3POINT for your input! I've rendered out the file with resampling disabled, but the same issue happens.

I've uploaded the Vegas Pro 16.0 project to Google Drive where you can see the exact settings I'm using. The export profile I use is: "MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4/Internet HD 1080p 59.94 fps"

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1myk-Td4ZNbLyvlVrF5OP-gCCTB4e4u-L?usp=sharing

Do you experience the same judder/stutter when exporting?

@mark1234

Thanks for uploading the clip. The problem is that when you import the footage into Vegas, you have lots of duplicate frames. Here's a short demo of a new tool for finding duplicates and also the use of ImportAssist for converting VFR footage to CFR without transcoding. I must admit that I'm surprised how well it worked for your clip given the variation in frame rate.

I then used the RendePlus tool in HOS for the final render. Here is a link to where the rendered file can be downloaded. https://www.dropbox.com/s/86r2vo3nvq3851o/Samsung8_VFR_import_HOS.mp4?dl=0

Didn't realize how much uploading really "mangles" IQ. It's much better to download the rendered clip to get an idea of its quality.

For grins, I also rendered a 4X slo-mo version of the same clip. The rendered file can be found here. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ikdxh7mxdcejq8y/Samsung8_VFR_import_HOS_sloMo4x.mp4?dl=0

Again, download. The player in DB is much, much worse.

Thank you wwaag, you're very helpful! I've learned so much from your posts, and that slow motion video looks amazing!

After studying your guides, these are my steps when creating a project using my phone footage:

Import the footage using HappyOtterScripts, so that it can "wrap" the video and tell Vegas it has a constant frame rate of 60.

Change the project properties so that it has a 60fps frame rate.

Export the project using HappyOtterScripts' RenderPlus tool. I've tried creating a new export profile in Vegas, but it doesn't seem to let me choose 60fps?

Let me know if this sounds about right, or if there are any shortcuts?

wwaag wrote on 5/28/2019, 12:51 PM

@mark1234

That sounds about right.

"I've tried creating a new export profile in Vegas, but it doesn't seem to let me choose 60fps?"

There is no 60 fps in the dropdown. Simply type in "60" and you will see that it changes. Then save as a new template.

Glad you found it useful. I also thought the slo-mo turned out pretty good as well.

these are my steps when creating a project using my phone footage:

The most important one you forget: Make a shot that`s worth looking at...means keep your phone a steady as possible and film a subject...despite the corrections wwaag made to your shot, it's still not worth looking at, my opinion.
