One way is to ungroup the 2 tracks before splitting.

If you click on the video event itself, this will position the cursor and select that event. Splitting at this point will then split just the video event and nothing on other tracks.

This was driving me nuts as well. Search around on "ungroup clips" in your help. It will lead you to a check box that lets you split and manipulate them seperatly.
