where is the "batch" in batch render?

I was assuming that the tools/scripting/batch-render functionality allowed processing of many files by running one, provided script. I thought I could designate the files together through the browse menu.

But it doesn't seem to work that way. I can't designate more than one file, even when using the standard control-click, and when the file is a .veg I'm asked if I want to save over it.

Obviously, I'm really unclear on the concept implemented by this functionality. Why would batch render want to save over a .veg file instead of rendering it as specified in the previous settings? I had checked QT7 and specified the template, so I thought the selected .veg file would just start rendering to a .mov file when clicking save. Nope.

Also, there is no provision in the interface for specifying a directory where a render is to be saved. It saves by default in the source directory.

This is a lot less useful than simply using the interface to render.

No doubt, all this can be written into a script, which I don't know how to do, but I thought that the interface would just plug in file values to an existing script and save the trouble of rendering 18 files one by one.

Can someone educate me on how to get Vegas Pro 10b to render a batch of .veg stereo video files to a given format and template? The help file has absolutely zero to say about this.

Thanks.

OK, it dawned on me that the batch refers to multiple outputs from one file, rather than to multiple files rendered in succession. I'm used to batch rendering in my 3D graphics program, which means the latter rather than the former.

It would be nice to have batch render in the sense that many .veg files could each be rendered from one script. Take a nap, wake up to find 18 of them all done.

You might want to take a look at some commercial tools that allow you to do it, such as Transcoder from Vegasaur toolkit or Vegas Pro Production Assistant

Hi,
Not sure if you mentioned this but the Batch Render script deals with Regions in the project. You can drop all your files sequentially onto the timeline, double-click on each one (to set the loop region to the file length) and hit "R" on the keyboard to create a marker region the length of the file (and repeat for all files on the timeline). When you go into the Batch Render scripting control you'll see "Regions" as an option. Now if you want multiple output formats, you'll end up with multiple formats of each region on the timeline. Naming of the files is a bit of a pain, but it will get you there OK.
Hope that helps.

I had to rename 135 files a while back. Batch exporting will often leave you with this menial task. "Rename Master" from Joe Joe Soft works really well, it lets you do all sorts of stuff to the names of a list of files and lets you preview it before you apply. So beautiful it brings a tear to my eye. Takes a bit to get used to using it, but ends up being pretty user friendly.

Vegas Pro Production Assistant will do what you want. You can load multiple files and render each to multiple formats. You can also batch process them in between, like adding a network bug, or converting 4:3 to 16:9 or any number of processes. It sounds like a tool you might find useful.
