Where's My Audio Gone?

Hi - firstly I'll say I'm a rookie with Vegas Movie Studio.

My problem is that when I capture the video into Vegas from my DV camera I lose the audio which is also on the tape. I connect my camera to my laptop with a USB cord.

An interesting thing is that if I play my captured video in the video capture window, the audio is there. But when I place the captured video into the timeline the audio is gone. There is a voice track which comes with the video track - but it is empty.

The file I am placing into the timeline/tracklist is a .avi file which I'm not sure is the correct format?

Thanks for your help - I'm happy to provide any further details if needed.

Harry

DV cameras use firewire, not usb, so what kind of camera do you really have?
Also, make sure you have the latest free update of VMS.

As Eugenia suggests, using Firewire for capture should take care of your problems.

I think that capturing via USB results in a Type 1 AVI file, whereas Vegas wants to work with a Type 2 AVI file. You are correct that the audio is indeed included in the AVI file you have (and that's why Windows Media Player can probably play it fine), but a Type 2 AVI file duplicates the audio stream in a format that is much friendlier to editing programs, and this is the format Vegas requires.

If you've already captured a significant number of files, you should be able to find free programs on the web that will convert Type 1 files to Type 2 for you. I've never used one, but I know they're out there. Use Google or Wikipedia to find out more about Type 1 AVI vs. Type 2 AVI.
