Where to Find Hard to find goodies

I guess this thread would be considered semi off-topic. I've seen threads asking about chroma keying supplies, lighting supplies, someone may have once asked where the heck do you get a clapboard? Well, this site may be what you're looking for.

http://www.studiodepot.com/store/index.cgi?cmd=site_map

A small sample of what you can find, includes Chroma Key Fabrics, spray on paints for chroma keying, chroma keying tapes, yes, even clapboards and fog machines and of course lighting and other "professional" goodies you won't find at Walmart or Best Buy or for that matter many places. So now you got a place that has all that stuff. Even those hard to find Rosco filters I mentioned in one of my tutorials.

While we are talking about hard to find stuff....

If you ever need special rope,
Consolidated Cordage Corporation

If you need special backgrounds (for portraits or interviews)
Amovona.com

If you need a custom size curtain (even out of chroma key fabric)
Rose Brand

StudioDepot is Mole Richardson- formerly famous for gear that was built like a tank. Just lifting it was a "Labor Opportunity". They surpassed LTM in the weight of their HMI ballasts.

There are a lot of other sources in the grip area. Some of these have a wide assortment of supplies:

Matthews (http://www.matthewsgrip.com/) has a very good line although their grip heads are now much too good. Never thought I'd say that.

Norms Studio equipment is also very good. Simple designs that work very well.

Modern has a lot of very creative designs. They tend to make things that the LA grips ask for. Happy to make custom stuff.

For gels I think Lee is the best. The color correction is usually truer and they're usually more heat resistant. Rosco is second (for me) but they have a wider range of other products.

For lights, Mole is the standard although I prefer Arri's fresnels. Arri's 1200w HMI par kicks butt but it's heavy. Mole has the best yokes and their open face lights will support the weight of a chimera. Mole used to rust like mad but I think they're using more aluminum these days.

There are tons of sources out there. Few of them have good websites. Going to trade shows is pretty helpful.

JB,

Liked the cordage link but it immediately sent me out to hunt for a source of black sash cord:

It has pictures! Woo Hoo!
