Where to get this transition?

TeetimeNC wrote on 9/1/2009, 5:30 AM
Take a look at this video around 1:07. I would like to use something like this in an upcoming project. Does anyone know if it is available commercially for Vegas?

Alternatively, I can see how to do this in Vegas using animated masks, but I haven't been able to figure out an easy way to produce the white flash as each cell transitions from event A to event B.

Here is what I did in a little proof of concept that did four cells. Anyone see a better way to approach this?

Track 1: Mask that animates from white to black sequentially for each cell.

Track 2 through Track 5 (all children of track 1): contains 1/4 second of white media for the flash. Used track motion to position each of these over the appropriate cell.

Track 6: (child of track 1): A image

Track 7: B image

Jerry you need a transition mat that consists of squares that are progressively darker in the same setup as your clip
If you need help generating one give me a shout I will send it off to you it’s very quick to do

Then use this in gradient transitions then import the same transition matt in Vegas add it directly on top of your transition on a new track and then use dodge to composite the top track
You will have to do this on each transition all on the same track

Hope this makes sense

I can rip a sample if you want

Rory

your top track has to be a mask the transistion will be a gradient so this has to be converted to mask = add mask gen to track layer

Rory, I continue to be amazed at your command of Vegas compositing.

In your description, when you refer to "gradient transitions" do you mean using the transition mat as a mask similar to what I did in my example. Apparently not, because I'm not getting the correct result when I add that above my matt track and use dodge composite.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could send a small sample.

Scott Moore has created a free Vegas plugin called SMLuminance available at http://www.endor.demon.co.uk and you can see its usage here: http://www.vegasvideohelp.com/custom-transition-using-image-mask/

Note that you still need to create a varrying monochrome mask as described by Rory, but this plugin lets you use it without creating any additional tracks.

Peter, thanks. I/ve used SMLuminance before, but not sure of an efficient (i.e., non-tedius) way to use it with this cell-based transition I am trying to do.

I know I am missing something very fundamental here. Say I create a 25 cell matt. Each cell goes from white to black at its point in the transition. I use this as a mask for my two image tracks to switch between the two lower tracks. This causes each cell to transition at its appropriate time from photo A to photo B. Simple so far but how to get the white flash just as each cell transition starts. Where do I use SMLuminance to do that?

Jerry, I watched the video clip more carefully since I didn't notice the white flash/fade at first. This makes it more complicated and I will need to think about it some more.

Jerry .... the first one is with vitascene from prodad the second is straight
If you want the first then dodge is right

But will run a pre render use that as the transition and you should end up pretty close

I will get back to you

Rory, thanks for putting that together. The example helps me understand what you were explaining. I think the vitascene transition is probably what was used in the original clip - I like the way each cell flashes as it is transitioning from the first event to the second event. I was trying to figure a way to do that in straight Vegas but the technique I came up with is too tedius.

Do you know if the prodad transition you used is in the limited version of vitascene?

Rory, thanks very much for sending me the info. I have been playing with another approach today. Here's what I have so far. Not as professional as the first one we were looking at but it holds some promise. I used the free VideoWall plugin found in a thread here to create the matt. I'm going to refine it a bit more. If it turns out ok I'll write something up and post it here. I also plan to present it to the Raleigh Vegas User Group meeting next Thursday.

Jerry your results are good, your matt that you generated from the video wall plug, it is an animated matt right ?
And using it as a transition and a overlay?

Rory, my result is an animated mat, but there is no animation in the videowall plug.

I created my own white to black animation and then copied it to each channel (cell) in the videowall. I grouped and offset them along the Vegas timeline to give the upper left to lower right movement. The flashes are a separate animation using the same mat and technique. Motion blur helps sell it.

I'll be away from the computer for a couple of days but will post a better description soon after I do a bit more refining.

Hey Rory,
I was just checking out you "myvideo" page. Nice work.
Question:
the Cinderella on ice.... did you animate the Cinderella on ice name in vegas or was that done somewhere else and imported?

P.s. Sorry for Highjacking the post.
Rory Cooper wrote on 9/3/2009, 11:45 PM
the Cinderella text I received as a targa seq and is copy protected i am not sure where or who did the seq
the rest of the clip was done in Vegas the ice like lower third etc
the clip is running on local broadcast with a voice over, that one is a link for the Teatro with no VO

for That type of text treatment you need a particle gen app like particlillusion, they have a freeb version PI SE you can download from there site
You need to create an png or tiff for the alpha channel static or matt sequence
When you set your particle set as area and use the alpha channel to map your particles ,using velocity scale for expanding or contracting the particles
And set size etc then composite in Vegas

Here is a sample, takes only a few minutes using PI

Added same place using particleillusion for transitions, not appropriate transitions for subject, but who cares on a Friday

Something to do during those long renders

That text effect was awesome and I liked the first transition in the baby video the best. There is so much I have to learn about Vegas. I don't even know how to seperate the layers so there is space between them. I look at some of this stuff and scratch my head.
Nice work.

I ended up making three similar transitions (after the first, the next two were easy). I used them in a "Welcome to the World" slideshow announcing the birth of my first grandson. The1st transition is at about 0:40. The video went out to our friends and family just hours after I left the hospital (thanks in large part to Vegas).

Of course, I'm not really old enough to be a grandfather...
