Which blank BD discs to buy?

Hi Everyone,
Please just let me know if I'm sane here, because it seems that blank BD discs are very expensive. My project appears to be about 16GB in size....this means that I can just go with a regular, 25GB BD disc, and don't have to go all out on the more expensive 50GB dual layer ones, right? Do you have any brand that you like better than others? I am looking on Newegg and Amazon for the best deals. Thanks!

Hi Jay,

If your project is 16GB then 25GB would do. I always use Verbatim BD (and regular DVD) blanks. They play without problems on all players I tried and when burning I never had coasters.

I'm new to blu-ray burning. A Verbatim disk came with my LG BH10LS30, so I bought a spindle of 2x Verbatim single layer. So far no problems.

I've been a bit worried about disk life, so for archiving, I burn two copies. Keep them in Jewell cases at different locations. Only time will tell ...

Ditto props for Verbatim. I've made several with my LG burner and have had no problems at all.

I also have one Sony BD R/W that I use for testing. I've done numerous reformats/rewrites on this one with no problems either.

Bought both at Amazon.

Thanks, the Verbatims burn fine...the problem is that they don't play on any of my BD players. Can anybody help? I have another thread with the current problem and it's terribly upsetting as this is the last step. Do I need to have any settings in place in order to burn and be able to play on home BD players? It plays on my computer without problem, but my home BD players say that it's an unrecognized disc.

I understand that some older (and maybe some newer as well?) BD players do not read BD-R media. If that is your case then no brand will work. Have you tried any other BD-R media in the players?

Hey Peter,
I've never used BD-R media in these players. My next step is going to be taking my discs over to Best Buy and just trying them in various players. At this point, if I can find a player that plays them, I might just buy it. My Pioneer Elite with latest firmware *should* play them though. I'm just frustrated because I've spent so much time creating this project and now can't get it to play on my players :)

You can be sure that BD recorders will read their own BD-R discs and almost certainly any other well-made disc as well, so be sure to try your discs in one of them. If that doesn't work then you know you have a problem for sure. On the other hand, if that works then hopefully you should be able to find a straight BD player at a much cheaper price that also works.

Another thumbs up for Verbatim. One thing that annoys me though is....why aren't they produced with the smaller 'hole'? Printing to disc looks so much better than with the 44mm hole.

Really surprised that your player won't play them even with the latest firmware. Are you sure the update was successful?

Hi Arthur,
It is very strange. The quality of these Verbatim discs is amazing, but they won't play on my player. I brought them to work with me today and will go test them in a bunch of players at Best Buy at lunch, then report back in. I've contacted Sony support but have yet to hear back from them via email. My BDP-23FD, after the firmware upgrade shows 3.65, which is the newest according to the changelog, and everything here tells me that they *should* work - http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/ephox/StaticFiles/PUSA/Files/BDP-23FD/BDP320_23FD_Change_History_PSE_Ver365.txt

Okay, update! I went to Best Buy with my three coasters to try in different machines. I first tried a new Pioneer Elite player which still failed to load any of them. I then tried a Sony player which also failed to load. Lastly I tried the cheapest Panasonic player they had (DMP-BD65) and it loaded up! I don't know why this cheap player seems to work when more expensive ones do not. I am going to try firmware upgrading my Panasonic player and see if it reads the discs.

I spoke with Pioneer and they told me that the discs need to be finalized. Can I assume that DVDA finalizes the discs automatically? It ejects the drive when complete.

I think we can assume that DVDA finalises properly.

Can you try your BD-Rs in a standalone BD Recorder? They are designed to burn BD-Rs and play them, so your BDs should play in one of them.
