Which drive to install Vegas

Greetings all,

I just got Vegas 4.0 and I'm about to install. I have a new Sager Notebook, 3.06mhz, 1gb ram and a 40g HD and a 60g HD. I'm running WIN XP PRO from the C: Drive, the 40g. My question is, should/could I install Vegas (and other programs or all my programs) on my second drive (the 60g), and only leave my OS on the first drive? Any problems with that, any benefits? I will of course, put my video files on a firewire external drive when I get to that point. Any comments or suggestions?

A good rule of thumb is to always have your operating system and all your program files on your main C: drive, and then have your second drive for Data only. That way when your operating system crashes (yes, it will happen) all your data is still safe on the other drive and you can then just re-format and re-install all your programs without losing any of your data.

Thanks for the very quick reply Jsnkc. I'm aware that its smart to keep your data on a different drive than applications for the reason you mentioned. I guess there is no benefit then to have the OS and applications on different drives?

Thanks

Jsnkc's advice is correct. I second everything he said. Also, another advantage to capturing on a different drive is that you will lessen your chances of ever dropping frames (not that this is much of a problem anymore when capturing DV on most modern computers).

Well, with today's drive price/size ratio it is better to have:
A. OS on one drive, Programs on second drive and data on third, or
B. OS on first drive, programs and data on second.
The reason in separating OS from porgrams is preformance: OS if very file access intensive, having it deal with files on one drive while programs are executing from anothers will speed up your PC. Programs wont take that much space out of your data drive (if you dont have a third drive). On my system "Porgram Files" folder on D (Data) Drive is about 2 Gig, and I have a lot of programs installed (VS.net, photoshop, illustrator, visual studio 6, whole buch of sound effects...)
