which format for archiving

I have decided after a lot of research that the most stable format to use for storing my video files is the DV format.

What is the best way to ensure all my files are in this format and can I render video projects in this format from Movie Studio.

Whatever format I choose I would want to use it in Movie Studio.

Is the video you want to archive standard definition or high-definition?

If you plan to use it in a future video project, DV-AVI is the best format for saving standard definition video, while AVC 1920x1080 is the ideal format for saving high-def.

DV-AVI is not an archive format, unless your source videos are also DV-AVI.
What is your source video?

The trouble with Archiving is they take up quite a lot of room - but you don't really want to lose data and any form of Compression will drop quality IMHO.

FWIW my Vids are AVCHD 50i.
These are saved on a second HDD from SDHC card as (dot)mts

I tend to archive my videos in the same file i got from the camera. That way they're just as good as the original because they *ARE* the original.

Of course, my video workflow tends to be event recording in which i will use 95%+ of the material that the camera recorded, so the waste is extremely minimal. For folks who do a lot of shooting but use little of it, this archiving method may be space-exhorbitant. In that case, the ability to smart-render into the same format as the original is the best option, if it's available.

There certainly is no one best archiving format.
