Which Import Format

Hi
I am new to Vegas 5.0 (I have had Acid for years)
I am having problems opening/importimg files.
I am told it is due to the different codecs.
I understand that and have work arounds like importing into my Apple Movie Maker and saving as a Quicktime movie but I seem to use quality.

I can't even import Windows Media Player 9 videos or Windows Movie Maker files.

What is the best way to import them from my camera/recorders.

If you're writing AVI files from Windows Movie Maker, they are type 1. I don't know for certain whether Vegas can read them, but I'm guessing that it does not.

There are a couple of freeware file converters that will write a type 2 AVI from type 1 input. One of them is made by Canopus. Don't have the url at hand, but if you Google on "Canopus file converter", you'll find it quite easily.
