Which resolution to import?

I have two Sony HD cameras (T500 and HDR TG1) that save in different formats, namely 720p and 1920x1080i. When importing into Vegas Pro 8, what settings should I use? Or will one setting suit both formats. And while I'm on the subject, is there an article somewhere that explains what the various resolutions mean?

I would think that you would want to edit on a timeline at the highest resolution (ie 1080 x 1920).

What frame-rate is the 720 in? I can get decent results mixing 24p and 60i, but if I throw in 30p for some reason I get funky renders. (I did a whole test on this over a couple of days and for me it saves headaches to convert 60i to 24p before I start editing and avoid 30p all together).

All that said, the settings don't matter as much as the final render output.
