White background problem and clip exclusion question

Hello there,

I am very happy with Sony Vegas Pro as it's the best video editing service I have ever tried. It pretty much gets everything done!

However, I've come across a few concerns about the program, which I would wish to have an answer to. Two, to be exact, and the first one is:

Whenever I use the jitter film effect or TV unsynchronization effects, the background will be white, instead of transparent or black.

In detail, these effects will cause the onscreen display to distort from its frames and create some empty space behind it. This is all what I needed, but the empty space will be white-greyish instead of the usual black or transparent. I think this problem didn't occur until a few months ago, and I'm not sure what is causing it. I included a picture below, it is the right edge of the video and if you look very carefully, you'll see some tiny white on the edges. It is quite hard to display it in a picture, but I hope it is understandable.

Onto the second question: how can I exclude one or more clips from the overall video output effects?

I really like using the feature of implementing effects on the entire video, instead of just a few clips at a time, because it saves a lot of time and effort. But sometimes, I wish to exclude one or more clips from the video output effects, but I cannot find a way to do so, and the only circumvent to this is to implement video effects onto clips by selecting them, but there's more room for mistakes doing this and the effects could not be in sync. For example, I want the entire video to have old film effects, but the credit roll at the end should be stable, smooth and sharp, so it's pretty much just one clip that doesn't need the film effects applied. Does anyone know a way or a feature to do this without that hassle?

If anyone can help me with my concerns, I would be very obliged and happy for the imput! Thanks for listening!

Your Q1: Please explain further? I’m not understanding the Picture you’ve uploaded. Sorry.

Your Q2: Put the Credit Roll on a Separate Track? No? Maybe I’ve misunderstood?

Grazie - with your Q2 answer presumably it would also be necessary to apply the FX to the track instead of at entire video level?

As for the white edge I can see a small amount of white noise at the edge of the frame. Similar to what you sometimes get with some formats e.g back in DV AVI days. Kexmeister, does it appear in the rendered file and if so what format are you rendering to?

Hello, Grazie

I knew I was going to have some trouble explaining this, because of the nature of these problems and English being my second language.

About the first question, what I'm trying to say is that film effects and TV simulators cause the video display to move around the display and go off the edges of the video. Such as the jitter effect and vertical unsync of which the former is a film effect while the latter is a TV simulator effect. Since display will go off the frames, thus creating some small spaces at the edges. Usually, the space behind the display should be black, but in my case, it's white. I hope it has helped you realize further into my problem, although my explanation is still vague.

About the second question, the general video output effect display will put the selected effects onto all video layers, clips and tracks. So, I can't put the credit roll on a separate track to fix this. I can make a screenshot when I get home.

Let me say, and not knowing your language, I’m betting your understanding of English is going to be far superior to my understanding of your mother tongue! It’s not your method of communicating, more it’s what you’ve communicated.

Q1: Ah right (1)! So are you suggesting that this is a Bug, that the edges Outside of the Effect were Black but now it’s White? Correct?

Q2: Ah right (2)! You’ve decided to add a Project-Wide set of FXs? Yes? I can understand you’ve got a reason for this? Yes? If so then yes what I suggested won’t work. But there is a solution. Create a purely Credit Roll VEG and add to it your Main VEG as a Nested VEG. There is a further Solution: If possible don’t add your FXs Project-Wide, but just to the Track. This would be a neater solution. Any issue for you?

Indeed! Thanks for understanding my issues, both match. I looked into the solution you provided for Q2 and it seems to be a good fix! Thank you!

I think I have found an answer to my first question myself. What I was using was the line sync effect, which I tweaked to make the video look more damaged, for a clip of a past event. The reason for the outsides to appear white are actually because the right left of the video is white and the unsync causes it to sometimes pop up on the right side as well, so it's not a glitch, but my own fault for not recognizing it.

Thanks you all for helping! I have my problems answered.

Here's a screenshot to demonstrate the explanation in the latter comment:
