Why A Jaggy Menu Page?

Authoring in DVDA 2.0b, my main menu page is jaggy--sometimes.

I'll insert the DVD into the player and it looks great. Other times it stops at the menu and it's a jaggy single field.

The graphic is a high rez still photo background with some Arial text over it. 16:9, 720x480 wide screen format.

It appears to park on a single field. Sometimes it loads differently and displays both fields. It might be a function of the player.

At first I allowed the menu length to be set automatically, then animated it for the default value of 00:00:00.400. As it is a still and nothing moves, I didn't think it needed to be animated.

Either way (default menu length or specified length) sometimes it really looks bad.

Player's fault?

I'd like to ask you a question: How many DVDs have you authored with DVDA? Do all of them have this problem?

If it's interlace artifacts, DVDA3 has a reduce flicker feature which improves this considerably.

Peter is right. This feature is very nice. Hope you understand that selecting this feature will make DVDA re-encode you source, so to keep the same quality, select optimize and choose a birate at 8,500.

I've authored several shows in DVDA, most with good success. The jaggy main menu is a hit or miss thing. Against a moving menu (a piece of video playing on the main screen) it's fine. With a still photo as a background, it can't decide what to display. Sometime one field, sometimes both.

I'll try the de-interlacing. Remember, it's only the main menu page, not the rest of the DVD. Everything else is fine.

De-interlacing?
Turn on Reduce Interlace Flicker under <General> guide on the right. If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to blur your pictures with Photoshop first (use Gaussian blur at 3% to 5%) or with any applciation that lets you do that.
