Why are my imported JPEG images grainy/blurry?

I would like to include some fairly high resolution JPEG files into my video, but after importing them into my project, they appear blurry and of very poor resolution, even the very large files shot by a pro photographer. Is this normal? Am I missing a step? Any help in getting these to appear as clear as the originals would be appreciated. Thanks!

By the way, my pixel aspect is: 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)

Resolution gets scaled to the output size. If that is SD, it's what you'll have to live with.

Would it make a difference if I first reduced the size of the pictures? Maybe I'm oversimplifying things, but what if I made the JPEG files the same resolution (pixels), dimensions, etc. as an image/frame from my video? I did a freeze-frame that is crystal clear. Is it possible to import a picture with clarity if it has the identical resolution and size?

How do the professional videographers and documentary producers introduce clear pictures into their videos?

Yes, it will be optimal if the stills are at exactly the same resolution as the output, but that is a pain because of SD pixel aspect.
The fact remains that SD will only retain say, 12% of the detail of your hd stills. It's simple math.

Produce full HD videos and a lot of issues will solve themselves.
