Why are my MPEG files larger than AVI?

I just loaded an 9,000KB AVI file and saved it as a MPEG-2, 320x240, and it came out about 17,000KB. I then tried saving it as a MPEG-1 at 160x120 and it came out at about 11,950KB. Aren't MPEG files supposed to be much smaller than AVI files? Why is this happening? Is this normal or just something with Video Factory?

This has nothing to do with VideoFactory per se. AVI files can use different compression settings, so if your source avi was heavily compressed to begin with, your rendered MPEG could wind up bigger.
