just dragged an event to try to insert it, which it promptly layered on top of my timeline in fine vegas fashion. ok, my bad. why won't edit history undo this?
then when i try to clean up the mess by cutting the event off of the top layer and getting it out of the way, it obliterates the important media i had sitting under it. is this some kind of crappy default feature that i can get rid of?
Undo normally works fine on moves including adding media to the timeline. Also, hitting 'delete' should get rid of any selected media and nothing else.
and how in the world do you make the ctrl + shift + v function not split up every single bloody track in the entire program? is there not some setting that lets you simply drag and drop events like good old nonlinear editing? where's avid mode when you need it?
Firstly, your description of what you did is not completely clear. What does "Layered on top" mean - on a new track, over the top of an existing event, video and audio or just video?
Secondly, Undo - the left curving arrow above the timeline, or Ctrl Z, will reverse any drag and drop, including dropping something on top of something else by mistake.
Please entertain the notion that there may be something you don't know, rather than assuming it's a "crappy default feature".
Vegas will do every possible type of insert - you just have to learn how.
i have a spliced event somewhere on my timeline. auto ripple is on. so i assume that means i can grab said clip, drag it to a destination, say the beginning of the timeline, and drop it, forcing everything else to move forward. instead, it just drops on top of what was already on the timeline. i hit undo, and it stays there. so i cut it to move it off the top of my valuable media, and find an empty void underneath.
then after reading up on it, i try to use the keyboard and do ctrl+shift+v to force a ripple. this works, but then it forces a ripple in all my tracks, screwing up the markers and regions of my source track, and generally opening a can of worms. there's plenty of other problems, but i'll start with this. thanks.
ok. first: how long have you been using vegas, and how much of the manual have you read? these are basic editing features that vegas handles very well, and i know they are documented clearly in the help system.
i'd be happy to help if you've already made an effort to find the answers for yourself but don't "understand," for example, something about how the manual was written.
but if this is the first time you've fired up the program and it doesn't "work" the way you want it to... well, start with the manual or tone down the belligerence. both will probably get you more answers (if indeed that's really what you're looking for).
if the manual were solving my problems, i would not be bothering the forum. the question that nobody has managed to answer is how do i get my timeline completely down to the first layer? there's all kinds of garbage now littered on top of the stuff i need to get to, and i can't figure out how to get it off.
First I would recommend that you turn Auto Ripple off - with this on, things can happen without you realising - it's much better to have control over rippling and use the Keystrokes as and when you want.
Second, be aware that there are three kinds of Ripple:
i) Affected Tracks - only events in those particular tracks will move (F)
ii) Affected Tracks, Bus Tracks, Markers & Regions (Ctrl F)
iii) All Tracks, Markers & Regions (Ctrl / Shift F)
Regarding your cluttered timeline, if you zoom in and carefully highlight only the events you wish to remove, this can be done, but it sounds as if you need to be more careful how you drag stuff up there in the first place. Do you know about Takes? (Pick up with Right mouse button - read the manual about this.)
Finally, it sounds like your Undo is not functioning properly. Reinstalling Vegas should fix this. First try this - open a new project, drag 3 or 4 items to the timeline any old how. Now hit Undo a few times - each hit should remove the most recently added item.
I just tried drop/draging an event on top of another. I used the undo and it worked fine. So, I also tried selecting the "bad" event and deleting it. Still no problem. Then (just to be sure) I placed the "bad" event back ontop of the "good" event, double clicked on the bad one, then hit delete. It still worked fine. Could you have a setting somewhere wrong? Not sure what one, but have you changed any default options?
Also, had to look up the CTRL+SHIFT+V thing. really cool. :) Never heard of that one. But, yeah, it IS wierd that it effects all tracks. Here's a simple workaround:
1) select event you want to insert between.
2) "S" split it (if you don't select the event then everything will be split)
3) Turn on ripple for affected tracks only
4) drop/drag the clip at the cut. It will shift the track (and all media linked to anything on thattrack, such as audio).
