Been experimenting recently (based on recent posts on SoFo forum) on how to create a DVD that will play 4:3 footage letterboxed on a normal TV and will fill the screen on a 16:9 widescreen.
So:
V4
->New Project
->Properties set to NTSC DV Widescreen (720x480, 29.97 fps)
->Add 4:3 footage to the timeline
->For each event, click on Event Pan/Crop, right-click on image area and choose "Match Output Aspect"
->Render to DVD-A Mpeg2 video stream, CHANGING Aspect ratio to 16:9 on Custom->Video tab.
->Render audio as AC-3 stereo.
DVD-A
->New project in DVD-A
->Properties set to NTSC Widescreen (720x480)
->Add previous MPEG2 rendered file
->Prepare to BURN
->HERE's the PROBLEM: DVD-A wants to RECOMPRESS the MPEG2 file and does so if I proceed, even though these were V4 sanctioned MPEG2 files. If I burn the DVD, it plays like I want it to (letterboxed on standard TV, haven't tested it on an actual widescreen, but WinDVD plays it in widescreen as planned).
My CONCERN is that I'm losing quality on the recompression.
Is it just not possible to create this kind of DVD with DVDA without recompression (standard NTSC DV MPEG2 files do not recompress - WIDESCREEN is the wildcard).
Am I doing something wrong?
