Why does "Exit" close my program?

kameronj wrote on 8/24/2003, 12:15 PM
I think there is a bug in the SoFo applications!!

When I"m working in Vegas or Architect - it is the damndest thing....but when ever I use the "file" menu and select "exit" the damn program closes!!

I was reading that other applications like DVDit or Premeire don't do this - maybe I should start using those instead! I mean if SoFo can't stop this from happening then what good can the other applications they have be...rights?

Reminds me of the probably one of the world's greatest pitchmen
P. T. Barnum of the Ringling Bros. Circus.

He had a very popular sidehow. Too popular, the people would enter the tent, but linger too long preventing P. T. from making as much money as he otherwise could if he could move the people through the tent faster.

How did he solve this problem?

Simple. He put up a big sign inside the tent that read: This way to the EGRESS which is just another word for exit.

Hey, wait, Kameronj has a point! I've seen lots of programs (usually my daughter's games) that pop up a window that says, "Are you really sure you want to quit this game?" Gives her a chance to change her mind.
kameronj wrote on 8/24/2003, 1:02 PM
Hey Rire..

That sounds cool...but I don't know if I would like all those windows popping up and all that reading stuff I would hafta do!!

:-O
DataMeister wrote on 8/24/2003, 1:18 PM
Yeah. I never understood all of those "are you sure boxes" in games. I mean usually the exit option is at the bottom of the menu and not easy to accidentally select. And besides, when you get to that point you are already outside of the active game.

I mean, who do they think we are, a bunch of kids or something? Oh ... wait.

Wanna know what's resally scarry? The power button on my computer doesn't shut off the power. i have to hold it down for a few seconds!

The exit screens in the origional Wolfenstien 3d and DOOM were pretty cool. A threat on your life if you answer yes. :) Sony should add an "ARe you sure" to everything, then infinate "Are you REALLY sure? We don't want to accidently piss you off" message. :)

The "Are You Sure" in games is a savior sometimes... Especially when you have a slow computer and wait a good 10 minutes for the game to open! LOL.
Chienworks wrote on 8/24/2003, 4:43 PM
That's because they don't make power switches anymore. Grrrrr. Now they make "Mode State Change Request Actuators". *sigh* Last time i was on the phone with HP support i told them that i can still pull the plug out of the wall socket when i need to. I think the support tech almost started crying when i told him that.

I was doing a service call with someone who couldn't turn their PC off by hitting the power. I told her - push the button and hold it for ten seconds.

Silently (in my jumbled thoughts) I started counting. Noting as accurate as a clock...but close enough to count to ten.

No crap she took her finger off the button at like 8 - and then had the nerve to look me dead in the eye and say it didn't work! I calmly told her "You have to hold it for 10 seconds. You held it for 8).

She huffed and puffed (or farted...couldn't really tell)....and did it again. This time - sure as crap - it powered off at ten.

Needless to say - she never doubted me again.

I just quietly laughed at her and went on my way.

OUCH! The standard delay is supposed to be 4 seconds. No wonder she had doubts.
BillyBoy wrote on 8/24/2003, 5:24 PM
You may be able to overide the delay in BIOS. Don't have my MB manual handy, I seem to remember seeing something to that effect with my P4P800.

Isn't the whole idea to be able to do a "soft" or "warm" reboot as opposed to a cold or complete reboot?

Reminds me of some B Hollywood SF movies. The computer or something goes nuts and nobody can turn the #$#$% off. LOL!
kameronj wrote on 8/24/2003, 6:11 PM
BB....I thought it was so you wouldn't accidently turn off the PC.

I remember back in the 8088 days I think it was IBM that put the power switch to turn the PC on/off in the back or near the back on the side. Good thinking cause I've know a bagillion people who were trying to open their CD Rom and turned off their PC.

I think you are right that that can be reset in BIOS somewhere.

I'm rendering a files...so I don't think now is the best time for me to check.
BillyBoy wrote on 8/24/2003, 6:16 PM
Because I can't see so good right now I sometimes hit the off button instead of the DVD button. The DVD players it right above the power switch and the button are almost the same shape and size. I look down and oops... LOL!

Unfortunately, the last time I checked... only women are allowed to change their mind. :(

Hitting the power button accidently is annoying enough.. but how many of you work with G4's and had someone (or you did it yourself) nearly put a finger through the cute little speaker in the front? I did it.. right after I uttered those fateful words "what does this button do?"
DataMeister wrote on 8/24/2003, 9:43 PM
What does the cute little speaker do? Or is it just really fragile?

I make sure to buy only power supplys with real flip type power switches on the back. They are VERY handy! One time my mom's power switch on the front of her computer wouldn't work, and shutdown in windows wasn't eigther. I told her to flip the switch on the back of the power supply. Luckly she asked me what the switch looked like BEFORE she flipped it because the only one she had was the 110/220v switch! LOL!

Oh, BB, wasn't it HAL from 2001 that they wanted to shut off and coudn't? :)

Chienworks wrote on 8/24/2003, 10:08 PM
How amusing! I just picked up "2001" on DVD on my way home from church this afternoon ;) Yes, HAL is the computer, and yes they wanted to shut him down. However, they were successful and Dave Bowman completed the rest of the mission on his own. While Dave was shutting him down, HAL sang "Daisy, Daisy" in an ever slower and slower voice.
Grazie wrote on 8/25/2003, 3:38 AM
Chienworks I suppose you knew that the next letter of each letter in "HAL" spells out the name of a rather famous international business machine manufacturer - guess you knew that though? Ironic? Maybe

Go over to www.imdb.com (the Internet Movie Database, a great site) and type in "2001" to get to that movie. Over on the left column, hit the "trivia" button. They say the HAL reference to IBM was accidental.

Great movie. I remember my friend hated it--he said it "had no plot." Kinda sad to see how wrong they were in their artificial intelligence timeline, though.

Who knows. If the cold war was still going on we may already be to pluto. To bad priviate industry hasn't taken over space travel (or for that matter, will the govt's of the world allow someone like Bill Gates to make rocket ships??)
Erk wrote on 8/25/2003, 7:27 PM
HappyFriar,

Would YOU travel in a rocket ship made by Bill Gates?

Just send me postcard when (if) you get there : )
