Why does it take so long to open an MPEG file?

Folks,

I have some very large MPEG files (5.5Gigs each) that I transfered from my ReplayTV 4080 unit. When I attempt to open or even select one of these files in VV3 or Batch Converter the program locks up for about 15 minutes while the hard drive activity goes way up. I am assuming that for some reason you guys are parsing through the whole file for some reason. Is there a way to turn this off?

Wow, those are huge MPEG files! VV3 can take a long time to build peaks for the audio track. I think there is an option where you can turn that feature off.

This has nothing to do with building peak files. This occurs when I simply touch the file with the mouse pointer in the file explorer tab, or the open file dialog in batch converter.

The same goes for DivX files too. Not only opening, but also trimming them and placing them in the tracks takes forever. It made me give up hopes of doing a little anime fan video edit in my spare time. Waah.
