Why does my captured video sound like crap?

hcgc wrote on 8/5/2007, 12:51 PM
I have a brand new JVC HDCamcorder and I am using the VMS to capture my video for DVDs. On the camera the sound is beautiful, but once captured it is carppy. I bought a new DV cord and the same video works perfectly on Windows Movie maker. What is the problem? Are there updates I can download or will the sound fix itself once burned on a DVD? Thanks.

Spec. about the audio noise is that it is like a crackling from time to time and the video looks choppy.

Do a RAM render of a small secrion and see what it looks like and how it sounds.

How do I go about that Terry?

Highlight a small section then Shift-B. You may have to set aside some RAM for this first. Go to Options / Preferences / Video and look for the Dynamic RAM Preview setting. If you've got at least 512MB of RAM you can probably set this to 128 or 256.

Thanks, I have plenty of RAM.

Just curious, exactly what type of video file and sound file are you capturing - I am assuming it is HD - but can you say how the camera is set to record? It may be a moot question, but then again it may be a codec issue. It is odd that it works for windows movie maker and not VMS so it suggest to me a "recognition" thing going on. I wasn't aware that windows movie maker could handle HD. So did you capture in Windows movie maker or with the Vegas capture program?

Are you talking about the sound quality in preview? If so, I've been there myself and I know the solution. In VMS, go to Options<preferences tab 'audio device'. Tweak 'playback buffering (seconds)' until satisfied. Good luck!

Thanks I will give it a try.

I used both but the VMS is all cracky on the audio in preview. WMM did not have this problem, so I am trying to save the movie right now and it is taking hours. I will update later on my status. But it may be this codec thing as people keep bringing that up. I really am not that computer savey, so on that subject I am lost as well. I bought VMS to have with family movies, but it has only been two weeks of frustration.

If you caputere with WMM, you are likely to lose the sound completely when you try to edit it in VMS! This happened to me also.
So here are the steps I can advise to you:
1) Run VMS
2) Capture a portion of video with VMS's capture program. 1 minute will do.
3) Listen to it in the preview section.
4) Tweak the audio buffer in the preferences until the sound is right. (Mine eg is 0.53).

Only if this doesn't work, I'd look into those codecs.

Under "File | Properties" maybe make sure these settings equal your source videos properties.
In your project media bin if you right-click on the video & select "Properties" VMS will display the properties of the source video.
Under "File | Properties" (your project settings), match these properties as close as possible.
For my projects under the "Project Settings", under the audio tab I generally use 48khz stereo with re-sampling set to "Good" because this is what most of my source videos are. VMS seems to default to 44khz, but your cams files are probably 48khz 5.1 (multi-track).

You can also have VMS do this for you by starting a new project and check the box to match the properties of a source video file, navigate to the file, select it and VMS will then automatically setup the correct "Project Settings".

Thanks all I will give these ideas a go.

Is C/net a safe place to download the codec and will it automatically fix the problem if it is a codec issue?

I know someone who had a stubborn error message solving the problem by installing the k light codec pack. You can find it here:

Thanks Ivan.

Here is an update of what I did today:

I downloaded drivers from adaptec.com
I downloaded codec and k-lite codec
I downloaded updates for Sony Vegas 6 & DVDA 3

Right now I am rendering my project again to see if the updates work and I will let you gals and guys know how it goes.
