Why does my music sound horrible?

IndieBoy wrote on 3/27/2004, 12:06 AM
I ripped some songs to mp3 to put into my Vegas project. If I listen to them in mediaplayer they sound perfect, but when I put them in Vegas they sound horrible. Whenever the music peaks, there is a lot of noise and crackling. What in the world could be causing this? I have it set up with the best resampling, 44,000 Hz, 16 bit.

System specs
2.8c
Asus P4P800
1024 mb memory
Windows XP Pro
Audigy 2 ZS
Vegas Video 4e.

The soundblaster cards always output 48 000 Hz. That might be your problem.

My guess is that either the track volume or the master is above 0dB and you're getting digital clipping. Turn down the volume at the master or track controls.

If the gains are all at zero or below, try dropping the gain anyway -- there may be something perculiar about your sound card that isn't interacting properly with Vegas.

Well I started by setting the audio properties to 48,000 Hz, but this didn't solve my problem. I have been playing with the gain controls to no avail. Any other suggestions? Anyone use an Audigy 2 ZS card?

Do you have the word clock to "internal"? I would also check that inside the sound cards control panel.

Does it sound okay at lower volume points in the song? Or is the issue all the way through?

I think that's some codec issue. I have the same problem when I quick-listen to mp3:s in TotalCommander - the default Windows codec is weird. Winamp and Vegas sounds fine, though.

Whyever did you put an MP3 stage into the scheme of things ? If you were ripping (from CD, presumably) you should have extracted directly into the Media Pool as 16/44k1/stereo wav and not lost a bunch of sound quality.

Also with the event on the Vegas timeline as an mp3, playing that track does involve some overhead in conversion on-the-fly.

Whether or not this relates to your problem, I can't say ....

Considering the motherboard and other bits and pieces you listed, why would you complete kill your chances of ever having decent recordings by using this rig with a Soundblaster product?

I would avoid the MP3 conversion stage as suggested by others in here...and quickly ditch the Audigyand shoot for a more pro level card. Your experience will be much better.

Did you by any chance save the mp3:s as variable bitrate?
Does your Vegas4 sound good using .wav-files?
