Its really "polartiy" and not "phase", but "phase" has become the common term
for polartiy.

This is useful if you have a multi-microphone recording setup and mics are either
wired incorrectly, or you have a mic, say, in front of the kick drum vs. behind it.
At mix time is is useful sometimes to flip the phase of some tracks.

In 5.1 you can create some interesting effects with lower frequencies (not subwoofer channel) by alternating between left - right being normal and inverted.
