Why is a Blank File Being Added to my Audio Track?

Note: I already posted this is Vegas - Video, as I had forgotten about the audio portion of the forum. Since I didn't receive an answer there, I hope that it's okay if I repost it here. Anyways...

Sometimes when I record a narration, a blank segment is added to the remainder of the track, following the recorded file. It's pretty annoying, and sometimes it overwrites narrations that were there before it.

The blank segment looks just like any other audio file, except that the equalizer line (or whatever its called) is flat, since there's no sound.

How can I prevent this from happening? Thanks.

Bumping it so hopefully someone who knows what's happening sees this =)

Describe your recording process in detail...(click this, blah blah blah, click that, etc.) I haven't ever seen anything like that happen, but the details may nudge an answer out of someone's brain.

Here's exactly what I'm doing (please forgive me for perhaps not using the most technical terms, haha)

Anyways, I click the record button on an Audio tracks to designate that track as the one the narrations will be added to. I then move the cursor onto the timeline where I want the narration to go, then I click the big record button right below the timeline. I then speak into the microphone and click the stop button when I'm done.

Most of the time, my narration is added to the timeline just fine. It looks like a simple short clip, with empty space both before and after it (since there were no other files on that audio track). However, sometimes when I click the big record buttom, it'll add a file that entends across the entire timeline, and then it records the narration onto that file. It looks just like a really long sound file, except that there's nothing on most of it.

I'll try and get a picture asap, because I'm not sure how well I explained it. Anyways, thanks for any help you're able to provide.

I tinkered around on my system, and here's what I found (and what I bet that you're doing).

If you have an area on that track's timeline highlighted, when you click record then the recording will extend to fill the entire highlighted area, regardless of the amount of time you actually record. In Vegas-speak, you're creating an event. If you just have the cursor positioned in a track and click record, it's going to automatically size the event to the amount of time recorded...but if you highlight an area, you're telling Vegas to create the event <-------this-------> big.

Does that make sense? Essentially just be careful about having space on the timeline highlighted before you click record. If you DO accidentally do it, it shouldn't be a problem...just shorten the event to the correct length by either dragging the right edge of the event to where it should be or by splitting the event at its proper ending point and deleting the unwanted right-hand side. All of those edits are non-destructive, so have no fear.

Hope this helps...I'm by no means a Vegas guru...somebody else may have to step in and explain it better.

Ahh, that solved it. Thanks so much!
