It should be there on your screen, unless you've turned it off somehow. At the bottom of the track headers on the left side of the screen is the word "Rate:" with a funky double-double-headed arrow slider and a yellow triangle. Grab the arrows with your mouse and slide it to the left for slow or reverse, to the right for faster forward. Move the yellow triangle to sustain a speed other than 1.00.

Artbot: If you're referring to the ability to "grab" the position indicator with the mouse and drag it around, you're right; I wish Vegas had this feature. My first editor was Studio7, and this was how you moved around the timeline. Perhaps there's some technical reason why Vegas hasn't incorporated this feature--yet.

I am a Studio 8 user...... VV4 does have the scrubber feature> CTRL click the wheel on your mouse. I does take a while to get used to it. VV4 could use scene detection. And show first frame of clip instead of a peak.

I think VV is just trying to be different - really. If you look at how is is laid out by default it is not the same as other NLE's and a lot of the things you 'expect' aren't there or not called the same. Some things aren't really intuitive, such as the way other NLEs can scrub by just placing the mouse over the timeline for example. I really don't use the 'scrub control' as is because when I pull on it it doesn't have the "feel" I like and when you use the "pointer over" method it works better because you use the mouse wheel but just that you have to fiddle about to make sure the mouse is over the scrub tool sort of slows me down. Like others have said - love the J,K and L keys. In case you didn't read the 'manual' - you can hold down the 'K' key and than hit 'L' to go forward or 'J' to go backwards. Works like a charm.

Hey, one of the nicest things about Vegas is that different users can accomplish the same result by going about it in different ways. I am familiar with the JKL keys, and use them all the time. I would also, however, like a little "handle" on the scrubber bar that I can just grab with the mouse and slew over the timeline, watching the video in the preview window as I do so. It is an extremely fast way to get to precisely the desired point.

I'm certain the clever guys behind Vegas can put a grab handle on the scrubber bar for us. Maybe I need to buy them a case of good Oregon Marionberry Jam. They'd like it.

I think one nice thing about a handle might be if it didn't move to every point you click on in an event.

Having an interface like everyone else's can lead to lawsuits. Macromedia suffered one from Adobe and had to take some nice little interface gadgets out (like being able to click and then roll over a whole set of checkboxes/toggles to set them all at once. Very nice)

Conversely, having an interface like no-one else's might be a little easier to defend.

happy with JKL, love my shuttles, should get to know the wheel mouse methods.

What I really like on my shuttles is that I can set buttons to pageup/pagedown and set the repeat rate. Gives me another fast speed to buzz down the timeline with.

I'd like a button in the tool bar to decide the behavior when the mouse is dragged over the timeline. The current action of selecting a loop region is useful, but not always something i want to do. In fact, having a new loop region created every time is often something i do not want to do and i'm annoyed that i've accidentally changed it from what i had carefully set before. Having a toggle that turns selection off would be very nice, and also allow the drag scrubbing that everyone seems to be asking for.

All these keyboard shortcuts are great but when is someone going to make a VV specific keyboard? You can get them for Premiere and FCP.

Oh..yeah yeah!! What Chienworks said. Yes...I had not thought of it that way...yes! That would be awesome. Did I say Yes? :)

This is already checked into the Vegas 5 codebase, and controlled by a pref. Basically, it makes the cursor a "grabbable" item, just like the edges of a time selection. When you drag it, it does not create a time selection. This behavior was suggested by someone on the forum, I believe, and makes perfect sense. No need to send jam, but if you're ever coming to Madison, please bring an extra jar. I'll trade it for some Bucky Badger Port Wine Cheese.

Also, regarding Vegas editing keyboards, you will hear some news on this in the near future.

Yay! You guys are great.

One more thing to add to the preferences section: making the "stickiness" or the "snap region" (I forget the official term) adjustable over a range of values from, say, 2 to 10 pixels. It's one of very few things that I've had to go inside the secret Preferences menu to adjust. I reduced the value to 3, which is Just Right for me.
