HD is already widescreen. Do you mean downconvert to SD widescreen? Yes you can.

I use both DVD and HDV depending on what I am doing. HDV is for High Definition output while DVD is for standard definition output. (for some reason I think High Definition needs to be capitalized but standard definition does not- that's strange).

yes when I render my hd footage in mp4 its a square...

so if you select DVD or mpeg2 over hdv it will convert your hd footage to sd?

Thanks. I didn't explain. I meant to an MP4 file. Whatever I did it would come out 4:3. Anyway, I figured it out.

By selecting the option "Allow the source to control the frame size" in the render settings for MP4 the HD footage came out widescreen as an MP4.

if it's for PC only you can also change the physical dimension of the file. that works very well.

You did notice that you can change the resolution in other ways than "Allow the source to control the frame size", right? If you want to deliver in wide screen that other dimensions than the ones your source file has, you can do that.

All my stuff is widescreen, and I hardly ever check the "allow source to control frame size".
