Wierd External Monitor Preview Problem

MUTTLEY wrote on 11/30/2004, 12:03 AM
In a small bit of hell here. When I try to preview on my external monitor for some reason now it gets laggy, goes back and forth from vid to blue and eventually freezes Vegas. Used to work find, dunno what happened. I can preview stuff on the computer but obviously that's not the way to work.

My external is connected via RCA jacks through my Sony GV-D900 connected via firewire to my computer. Never had this problem before.

Someone please tell me you've had this happen.

Er .. not quite the same .. but . . .

1/- Check Cabling

2/- Use another Veg to check

3/- Check Monitor . . I know, but I'd check it ..

4/- You got the correct settings for NTSC - or whatever - still in place?

5/- Check with a last "known" working veg.

6/- Pump it out to a DV cammie and check that?

7/- ( . . oops I tell a lie ! Something similar .. . . Here goes . ) Don't laugh, BUT do your FANS kick-in when you observe/see this momentary monitor "Hang"? . . . OOhh nasty

But it does sound like a f/w plumbing problem .. Yopui added anything that would "hobble" the f/w flow? Any other f/w devices added recently? New USB stuff? You changed the f/w ports?

.. I really hate it when this happens ..

1) Same Firewire cable I've always used.
2) Some Veg's play fine, but the disconcerting part is that it happens even if I just add any vid file to the timeline. Changing settings doesnt seem to help.
3) Um, its okay.
4)Yea, same settings.
5) Did, some work.
6) Havent had a chance.
7) No, fans are running fine.

Yes, got a new firewire card, Adaptec. Its plugged in secure, may be the root of all evil but doesnt make sense why.

And just did a reinstall of Vegas to no avail.

So yea, some veg files preview fine, some lag and crash. Makes even less sense to me. Don't see any difference in settings in the veg files that do or dont. Makes me think even less that its a fw thing as I would think if it was the fw it would happen on all not just some.

As my old Chum, Shelock Holmes keeps telling me, "How often have I said to you [ Grazie ] that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?"

I'd be looking very very closely at the Adaptec and if it brought any "new" drivers with it . . Adaptec deals with the layers thingy . . can't remember the name of this layer stuff . . what's it called? . . But anyway it is "crucial" that this Layer Set is kosher and yes up to date .. maybe, the Adaptec has launched an old version and your "latest" layers ned to be reintroduced . . ?

Well completely uninstalled the Adaptec, put back in the old one ... same thing minus the crash. Still not showing video while playing, mostly just blue with squiggles, but it will show the vid when paused.

"but it will show the vid when paused" . . hmm... interesting . . . ?

Have you tried testing the monitor? ..
Grazie wrote on 11/30/2004, 1:28 AM
. . sorry Mutts, you DID say yes .. hmmm...
Grazie wrote on 11/30/2004, 1:35 AM
Can you now check out the Sony GV-D900 . . why DID you get another Adaptec Card anyways?

Can you test without the Sony GV-D900 in the way? Can you use another AV<>DV option .. ? Maybe a cammie .. this is just to eradicate the Sony GV-D900 as being the problem. IF you find the problemn goes away then you have to think about the Sony GV-D900 being crook - yeah?

Could well be the monitor, I assume the payback fps stays the same?
It's possible to output an out of legal signal down firewire and thru an A->D converter that can make monitors go nuts. Good ones shouldn't, my "TV" monitor does it all the time. But maybe, just maybe somethings drifted in the monitor just enough so that some stuff upsets it.
How to eliminate it. Well copy the offending program to tape and play that back to the monitor, if it still goes nuts I'd say it's a fair bet it's on the fritz. The cammy is another possibility, so play the same back into another device.

I'm having the same problem here.

I have searched multiple forums for an answer to this problem but have found nothing like it mentioned anywhere. Using Vegas 5b with External Preview will cause Vegas to lock after a few minutes. Basically what happens is that the external monitor goes blank and, of course, the preview window remains the same with the message about external preview being on. Audio is still going fine and the timeline cursor is still moving. The mouse cursor moves normally too. I'll try and stop the video by using any method available (mouse clicks, key presses) but Vegas simply won't accept the stop or pause events. The only thing that that I am able to do with Vegas at this point is open Task Manager and choose End Process. Even this takes a long while. Subsequent restarting of the Vegas application typically yields very long start-up times if it doesn't lock up on the re-start. If Vegas does start successfully then it will not see the IE1394 device. Checking windows system devices reveals no problems with the IE1394 device and it is available to other programs and works with them. The only recourse I have to restore proper Vegas operation after a lock up is to re-boot my machine.

I have tried numerous configurations of running services and applications and all my drivers are the latest. My system is an Athlon 1GHz with 384 Mb SDRAM with an NVidia Ti200 graphics card (Gainward Ti450) running Windows XP Pro SP2. My motherboard uses a VIA chipset and I’m aware of the latency issues with this chipset. I tried a beta fix for this latency problem called "PCI Latency patch for VIA Chipsets” but it did not do anything to resolve the locking issue with Vegas. I am running out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions????

Here's my thread at DVinfo.net: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35939

Thanks in advance.
