Wildley inconsistant motion menu rendering times

RedEyeRob wrote on 12/22/2003, 12:05 PM
I am experiencing some a wide difference in rendering times for the same length motion menus. I often can rendered 5 thumbnail size motion menues on the same page in say less than an hour but sometimes with mateial encoded at the same rate it will dedide to take 16 hours to render the same number and length of motion menus. I can't fugure out why. It's not a corrupted project because I have started with new ones to check that. Any ideas? If I deselect the animated menu option it of course renders immediately.

DO you also have some motion buttons on some projects and not others?

I was scratching my head for a while trying to figure out what was causing wide differences until I realized that I had set a whole scene selection menu to have motion buttons so it was having to render the video for about 8 clips that were on the menu (which was 1min long).

Nope. I have 5 motion thumbnails on the first menu screen. This menu has music about 2 1/2 minutes long so basically it has to render 5, 2 1/2 minute thumbnails. One of the thumbnails is a scene selection button to another menu but that menu has no animated thumbnails. Sometimes I do the same thing and it renders at about what I think it should say about an hour or so but other times it takes nearly 20 hours. The base media file is a one hour long MPeg 2 with ac-3.

Also when trying to switch between menus I'm working on it seems to take forever for the clips to load. This may be normal for longer files.

Did you check the size of the menu (in optimize) a 2:30 long menu should be about 150MB (at 8Mbps).
What is the source for the thumbnail video ?

The menu size is 144.8 MB. The source of the 5 animated thumbnails is the single 4Gig MPEG2 file encoded at 8200 average.

In my opinion it should not take 16 hours, 1 hour is plenty.
Could it be a disk or IO related issue - where the source files are, where the temp directory is ?

Probably not. The source files and output folder are on a 120GB WD with 8MB Buffer. The temp directory are on a different 200 GB WD with 8MB buffer. If I just select the first two thumbs to be animated it renders normally any on the last three on top of that and forget it. But if I select a different two thumbs to animate it takes forever. Also I tried each of the 5 individually to see if one in particular was giving me trouble. All 5, when selected to animate by themselves render quickly.

I also tried uninstalling DVDA and reinstalling it, no joy. I tried changing the default compression bitrate in optimize for the menu and it didnt make any difference when trying to render the 5 as animated thumbs.
