Will 32-bit float help with video noise?

I have some overly red wallpaper in a scene and once the facial coloration is corrected, there is a very busy, blocky noise in the wallpaper. Can V8 help me process more of that out? (I am using V7 so far.) If not, is there something more tweakable than the Dynamic Noise Reduction plug-in for DV that has been available?

I use Neat Video and really like it. The latest version works with VP8. It isn't free but well worth the $$.

Doubt it. The main thing to do is to use a good noise reduction plug-in. I haven't been following them much so I can't tell you which ones are good price/performance/speed.

I suspect that the blocky noise in the overly saturated red wallpaper is a combination of the 4:1:1 color sampling of DV (or 4:2:0 in case you're using HDV) and 8-bit video processing. A noise reduction plugin isn't necessarily going to be able to cure that. Could you post a frame grab of the problem?

I have been really impressed with what the NeatVideo plugin can do, but, like I said, I don't think it's going to solve your problem. If it's what I think it is, it can be fixed with the Magic Bullet "deartifacter" plugin, but it's a little pricey. Have you tried a little chroma blur at the end of the chain of FX?

I have this problem very often in HDV and find that I have to use the Mike Crash noise reduction filter extensively, especially with red areas in in shots with heavy color correction. In my 32 bit V8 tests so far, I have found that I can eliminate use of a noise reduction filter completely. Some noise still exists, but for all but very critical work, what remains is hardly noticeable. So, yes, 32 bit processing appears to have a substantial benefit here.
