Will rendering with VV 8.0 on a Laptop FRY IT?

GeoffCampbell wrote on 10/29/2007, 8:00 PM
I would very much like to upgrade to VV 8.0. However, I no longer have a Desktop. I have a laptop with these specs...Intel 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo CPU with 2MB L2 Cache / 2GB DDRRAM / 80GB Internal 5400RPM HD. If this system can handle the rendering with VV 8.0 and not microwave itself, I will get an external HD. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...Especially with regard to the external HD. Many thanks to any replies, Geoff Camp.

Not sure what VV 8.0 is, but i'll guess you mean VP 8.0 ...

You won't fry your laptop. No risk of that. However, the problem i have with my laptop is that the processor will get so hot that the whole computer shuts down. Sadly, it doesn't do a hibernate first; it just turns off, losing everything i was working on. I've gotten around that by purching a Targas "CoolMat" to put underneath it. At some point i really need to open up the case and blow out the dust. I'm sure airflow inside it isn't anywhere near as good as it should be.

Each laptop is different, so who knows what may happen. Frying most likely won't, but it may crash or shut down due to overheating ( it shouldn't if it's well designed )

I've done a lot of rendering where both cores are maxed out ( mostly XSI and Fusion, but Vegas is the same, uses both cores ) and haven't had any problems on 2 different laptops ( one ASUS and one Sager ).

I usualy render to WD drives ( but can be any ) dropped into a couple of external enclosures and connected via firwire or usb. For that purpose, eSata may be something to look into these days ( if available on your machine )

never had an issue with core 2 duo 2.0 1gb ram.. trick to speed however is to have an external drive as the source, two fo these (source and delivery drive is better) but if u cant do 2 externals, use the 1 external for source and render to your system drive

huh? This is news to me! My Dell Inspiron runs forever, renders forever, no problems.

Oh, my laptop used to run forever at 99% processor load too. That 's why i'm thinking i have a bad case of dust buildup in it now.

mobility is the name of the game for me. I actually do everything right now on a laptop and just dock it to 2 screens when i get back in my office with a bunch of externals attatched here. (little over 2TB to be more exact) I've never fried a laptop and I've used a few. however I'm currently building a $1K quad core desktop and that will be the first desktop I've had in years. You can probably render with no concerns.

I use a Dell core 2 duo with ver. 7 and render both WMV and DVD and no probs. at all. You might use more power, so it might be a good idea to run on the powersocket if yopu can.

Running here on an older AMD Turion64 laptop ..no dual core and no problems here.
Works great too with the Canon HV20.

Cheers

Just an FYI for those who are laffing at the topic of this thread.
My render disk and my project disk are now 8Gb Sandisk extreme IV CF cards. These things work GREAT! No more bulky external drives to lug around! I love technology.

How do you connect it Bill?

Do you have a lot for it build in or do you use an external reader?

Ulf...

I have one firewire 400 port built in and one expresscard slot with a firewire800 ecard inserted. I run one CF card on each bus. I'm going to try a RAID 0 config with both CF cards on one 1394a bus, gonna see how much more I can gain. Obviously, I have to disconnect one CF card to capture from my camera.

Thanks Bill - I'm lokking for a lolution for my laptop instead of the external HDD to carry arround, so this is probably going to be something like that.
