My thoughts: if you feel that you'll eventually buy 6 after some of these early problems are worked out, you're only wasting your own $ by waiting for the update. If you don't think they're going to be resolved at all, then you might want to wait.

I opted for door #1, and Vegas 6 has worked fine for my low-demand purposes. I love the new features in DVDA-3. That nearly justified the upgrade price on its own, for me.

You can always get the upgrade and not install it, or install it to become acquainted with the enhancements, but not rely on it for critical projects until the next update comes along.

good grief, you dont need to wait until 6b. If you want to take advantage of the upgrade price, buy 6a now, and when 6b is released, download the demo, install, and use your serial number then. Thats what I did, and I recieved the upgrade package last week. Its sitting in my closet for now.

Your activation code is good for all versions of Vegas 6.

There has already been one upgrade. From 6.0 to 6.0a. decaffery is right. If you want to wait for 6.0b, just buy now and sit on it. But, doing that you lose the current tangible benefits of 6.0a, which has worked fine for me and many others. Bugs are a part of software. Get used to it. If you want a finished product wait for 6.0h. That will at least be closer. Sometime next year, about April.

Historically, the guys/gals at SoFo/Sony have been very good at getting the software very stable, within a relatively short period of time.
I say it's a no brainer if the added functionalities improve your workflow.
I've got my V6 and DVDA3.

I am going to upgrade even though I am very concerned that this is the buggiest yet. I still have a lot of confidence in the updates taking care of silly bugs. But I am disappointed that something like track motion presets is one of the only new features in this version. I am personally a long way from taking advantage of HDV and its great that they have that in there. But, the main reason I am upgrading is that I finally will get DVDA. I have held out and not gotten it. Mainly because I was worried that my Plextor 708a would not work well with the earlier versions. But the only time it makes sense to go from Vegas alone to Vegas + DVDA is during this promo period. Otherwise it is just too painful for us poor people.

I have also decided that I will look to After Effects and Combustion to achieve the kind of compositing thrills that I had secretly hoped Vegas would aspire to. Clone tool native Illustrator files -- that is some pretty compelling reason. There are plenty of ways to do a lot of things with Vegas but they obviously dont see the need to further develop its compositing capabilites. Otherwise they would have the kind of text creation that you can now do in AE 6.5. I have played around with Graffitti --NEXT.... and then the other goofy stuff including cayman graphics and bluff titler . They all left me dissappointed. I am sure I will be disappointed with AE and Combustion too. I have not even figured out how I can afford those programs but I have already started to learn them. Oh well, I am excited to get DVDA. I got sick trying to make interesting menus with the ULEAd demos and the Roxio crap. I dont want to make sstuff that looks like I used a wizard to build it or people wont want to pay for it.

If you fully intend to buy V6 at some point , I see no reason to wait until the $50-off promotion ends. Either install 6.0a and put up with what few bugs might actually have an effect on you, or don't even download V6 until the update is ready. No harm, no foul, and you saved fifty bucks.

As to the question in the subject, let's put it this way: Vegas 5 was released in April 2004; the 5.0b update was released towards the end of June. I don' t imagine the update schedule would be much different this time around.
