win 98 SE & ram question

I just finished some session work at a studio where they use Paris, and got to talking with the engineer. I was inquiring what sort of setup he was using, etc. and told him I was a SF/Vegas/Sound Forge user. This guy was telling me that WIN 98SE doesn't recognize RAM over 512, and that you have to config it by managing virtual memory and messing with SYSINI files. I just added another 256 PC133 to my system (768 total) and swear it's more stable. I'm too chicken-shit to mess with virtual memory. Any thoughts from the experts??

I've never had to deal with this issue myself, but from what I've read Win98 does have a limit of 512MB (and WinME too, I think).

These links might help you:

It's probably more stable because your physical memory gets eaten up more slowly over time. I've never heard of 98SE underreporting RAM. I keep RamBooster running on my "always-on" internet machine to periodically free up memory, it runs well over a month at a time without rebooting.

Personally..? I tried "Link One" at one time, and didn't like the option; it was awhile since I did that; tried Jose Catena's stuff, and still like some of it, but I let windows manage it, and have "network server" in my "file system"...I have 512 DDRam, but you know, I've heard 98SE starts having trouble managing RAM after 128MB...!! but even that's not enough to make me switch to XP with my setup...you know, like, that's just 1 thing wrong with 98SE, you know..? I'm serious; one thing...! now I might opt for a 2d computer, laptop or desktop, with XP on it, and I'll expect it to perform admirably with what I'm using now or I'll be pissed as hell...if you want to tweak, make sure both hard drives are @7200 and you beef up your mobo/cpu, but wait till the end of the year if you want to go to, say, an AMD 2500 or so...cheaper...

Other "tweaks" might be a removable drive bay option, get a clean install of your 98SE every year or so to dump that flotsam and jetsam, particularly if your setup is "multi-lateral", a bigger monitor with the new plasma/LCD offerintgs, better lighting, a foot heater, hell I don't know, a camcorder so you can use the video option of your vegas...all that stuff'll run ya about 2-3 tankfuls of gas..

ibliss, thanks for the 2 links. as per link one, i went to sysinit and typed in the following:

[vcache]
MinFileCache=32768
MaxFileCache=32768
ChunkSize=512

furthmore, I disabled virtual memory to try to replicate the conditions this engineer I know who's studio uses Paris has setup on his system. So far with limited usage, I notice the following; less ram % used on my vegas projects from previous settings, and a perceptible increase in speed opening projects. I'll run these settings for a while and see what happens.
