Win2k and Sony TRV20 Print to Tape

glennjohnson wrote on 1/2/2001, 9:06 AM
Here is the problem:

When I try to send a video back to my camcorder, the
camcorder is receiving video that is primarily a gray
screen EXCEPT that there are 5 little boxes on the screen
that are like little windows where the video can be seen.
The sound is also distorted.

Here is what I tried to correct the problem:

1) reformatted to WIN98SE - This solved the problem, but I
have very large videos so I want to stay on Win2K. Also, I
teach Win2K, so it is better for me to stay on 1 operating
system.

2) Back on Win2k (from this point on). Completely
reformatted and installed Win2K and Service Pack 1. Then
installed the Video Capture program and same problem.

3) I am sending the video to a Sony TVR-20 camcorder. I
tried sending to a different model Sony Camcorder and had
the same problem.

4) Tried ULead VideoStudio software, and Matrox Studio DV
software and had the same problem.

I am on a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop
specs are:
650 Mhz Intel PIII
512 Mb Ram
2 -> 25 Gb Hard Drives
The built-in video is ATI Rage P/M Mobility AGP 2x
The build-in audio is ESS Maestro2E PCI AudioDrive

I am using the Western Digital 1394 Cardbus PC Card.

I am sure that Win2K is the common denominator here, but I
am wondering if anyone else has this problem or better yet,
a solution!

Thanx,
Glenn Johnson

When you plug-in your DV camera, it should recognize it
as "Microsoft Camera and VCR". If not, its possible you
have other DV drivers and codecs on your machine. Please
check this- more info at:

Hi Dave,
Thanx for the prompt reply. I went thru everything, and
even re-installed Win2k in order to assure that Microsoft
Camera and VCR showed up, as well as using the 1394 driver
that Win2k detected. Same problem.

The weird thing is that I can capture fine. It appears as
though I always lose the first frame, and no others. I
have done 6Gb captures without a problem.

It's the "Print to Tape" and the "Preview on Camera" that
have what looks like a gray overylay on the screen with a
couple of blocks punched out. Where the blocks are, I can
see the acutal video, and the audio is very distorted.

Every package that I have works the same. ULead, Matrox
and Sonic Foundry. Also, I don't have the problem under
Win98SE or WinME. It's so consistant that I would think
that someone has had the same problem.

Please let me know if you or anyone has any other ideas.

Thanx,
Glenn Johnson

Does this happen for clips you just captured or only for
Vegas rendered clips? Also, we've seen issues like this
before with the Western Digital 1394 card, you may want to
try a different OHCI compliant 1394 PCMCIA card.

Before trying a different card, make sure DMA is enabled
for those hard drives.

Hi Dee,
Ya, I went back and checked, and DMA is enabled. Also, I
have removed sound card and video drivers with the same
result. I think you're right, I think it is the Western
Digital card, or it's driver, since the card works fine on
Win98SE.

I'm gonna order a different 1394 Cardbus PCCard tonight.
Any suggestions?? I won't hold ya to it, but if you know
of a card that most people have been happy with, I'll go
for it.

Thanx, Dee
Glenn Johnson

I believe the OrangeMicro PC card is the same card as the
Western Digital, so you may want to try something different
from those.

Problem solved!! Just as you thought, the 1394 Western
Digital card was the culprit!

I just purchased the SIIG PC Card, popped it in, and
Shazam! :)

I have been working with Vegas Video for 2 solid days, and
I am amazed that I haven't had a single crash!

You can't be ready for the problems that I have had with
the Premiere/Pinnacle DV500 and the Premiere/Matrox RT-
2000. They are terrible! The support is non-existant. I
waited on the phone for over 1.5 hours for Pinnacle support
and finally gave up. I tried again on another day at a
different time, same thing...

Why do they have so many problems?? I think they are all
trying too hard to re-invent the wheel. Even the 1394
ports on these boards didn't work properly.

3 morals to the story:
1. Don't use Pinnacle/Matrox/Premiere
2. Don't use the Western Digital 1394 Cardbus PCCard (on
Win2k, ok on Win98 and WinME)
3. USE SONIC FOUNDRY VEGAS VIDEO!!

Thanx,
Glenn Johnson
