Win98 RIP

TorS wrote on 4/19/2004, 2:08 AM
Reading the (hypothetical) manual for Vegas 5, I learn that Vegas no longer will run on Windows 98E. It requires Windows 2000 or XP. This makes for an easy decision, but nonetheless a sad one. 98E has served me very well for a long time. I shall miss it.
I feel like one of those teenagers from faraway countries who are being married off to some "appropriate" party against their will. But Vegas 5 is too tempting to resist. You know what Oscar Wilde said about temptation ...

It should have been obvious that this would happen. Sound Forge 7 only runs under 2000 & XP.

Ah, Kelly, that's probably the reason I'm still on Sound Forge 6.

Tors - sympathies. I was also attached to W98SE.

After a few sessions with '98 ers Anonymous I was finally able to leave it alone, although I still have a spare C Drive in a Caddy with W98SE.
Every autumn, I load it up and play strange yet valuable midi compositions on my DMan PCI sound card (W98 only).

You have a PCI sound card? That's grand.

Grazie - I, too, was dragged kicking and screaming to XP six months ago. It was the best decision I ever made (other than marrying my wife...)

Well that's only from my own observations but it's the ONLY OS I've seen used anywhere in Asia and that includes India and China, so there's 2/3 of the world accounted for. It's probably also the worlds most pirated OS but imagine the effect on uStuffs bottom line if everyone of those PCs were upgraded to a legit copy of XP!

Yes Tors, the DMan PCI (from Midiman - now MAudio) - was (is?) a fairly serious card - gold plated stereo RCA in and out, plus Midi etc . No drivers for XP though, so the midi's gone (Crystal Fusion drivers keep the Audio pumping)

I hear ya, Tors - I'm in the same boat, and my feeling reflect your sentiments, exactly...

I AM in the mood for as OS upgrade (I've got XP at work, and LOVE it), by my Dell at home will not support an upgrade to XP (at least according to the Dell website). So that means I need to get a new PC, as well. Don't get me wrong - I'm dying for a new PC, but just can't afford it yet - bad timing

Kelly - I could definately see the writing on the wall, but am still somewhat dissapointed...

I'll lurk around on the V5 posts to watch everyone else having fun with it...
