Hi people,
I would like to know if in fact anything can be done about this problem. Help if you can and save a "classic" scene, obviously filmed outside, and there is conversation which you can hear, but the wind sound just ruins it. what can I do?
Regards
Virtually impossible. You can use a mix of EQ and compression, sometimes a gate (rarely) but if the wind is really bad and inconsistent, or blowing across the mic diaphragm, you can't do much. If you wanna send me a short sample, I'll take a peek at it.
Spot, thats a great idea, thanks. In addition you can give me tips to better the quality of the video, since its filmed outside during winter, snow all around, and the whole picture looks bluish (from the sky I guess). How do I take a 10 sec clip from the timeline, and how do I send it to you?
Strip out the audio only. Maybe render to a high bitrate MP3, like 128Kpbs or so. If you want to send the vid too, then render as a 512Kpbs WMV file. I'll still be able to hear/see what you want it to show.
I'll play with this in a bit, but at first listen...it sounds like you used the on-camera mic, and there is a lot of wind directly striking the diaphragm of the mic. That part of it is never going to be recoverable no matter what. The small ice sounds in there, cars moving down the street, etc...they can be dealt with reasonably easy. However, when the wind hits that mic...You're DOA. No recovery. http://www.vasst.com/streaming/MiniFuzzy.wmv will show you a simple way to make a fuzzy to go over your camcorder if it's a palmcorder style.
Check your email. I sent you back a veg. With some better plugs, you can do a marginally better job, but when that wind smacks the mic diaphragm...there is just simply no recovery. It's like a camera being hit momentarily with a white light so bright it kills everything in the shot. When that happens, there is nothing left to recover. It's the same with your wind.
Put the clip in Forge and run clipped peak restoration. It will help reduce the noise, maybe to a more acceptable level. This only works on really bad stuff.
Would it be possible to rerecord the conversation in house using the actors involved? And then add it to the video? This would enable you to use most if not all of the sound captured on site but just enhance the worse part.
Nah...after having seen the vid, it would be VERY hard to do ADR with it. The scene sent to me was simple enough that it might need reshooting, but given the nature of the piece, it probably can be used as-is, with a couple of problem areas that are just gonna have to be part of the project.
I'm sure Contender will chime in. Definitely a funny piece, very Abbot and Costello-like.
