Windows 10 update clobbered my machine Jan 9, 2018

After this Tuesday update, my computer wouldn't boot Win 10 past the blue screen with the 4-pane white window. Deeply scary. Multiple attempts, no joy. Gave up and went to bed.

This morning I turned it on, got further - "Diagnosing your PC", followed by "Attempting repairs". I have little faith in Win's repair capability, but it got to a point where it is rebooted, and then announced "Couldn't complete the updates" and backed them out. So today I am up and running again. (And making a fresh recovery flash drive.)

Beware...

Welcome to the club.  Do you have a recent image you can roll back to?  Don't forget there will be an 'intel' update coming thorough any time now.

Here is what it took to fix my Win10 PC after the latest update (you may or may not need to do all steps. You have to be able to boot up into Windows):

1) Press the Windows key and "x"; select "windows powershell (admin)" which is the 2018 version of a DOS box.

2) in the DOS box type

"chkdsk c: /f /r /x"

(assuming C is your OS drive). It probably will say that it can not check the disk now, do you want to check disk on next reboot? Select yes and exit the DOS box and restart the PC. Let the PC run check disk on startup and fix everything that it can.

3) Go to the web and find and download "Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter", install and run, let it fix whatever it can find. Restart the PC.

4) Go back to the windows key and "x", select "windows powershell (admin)", and type the following:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

And reboot again.

I personally would run #2 at least twice, then #3 and then #4 (that takes the longest to run). If you are not familiar with running commands like in #2 and #4, then you should note that you have to type the text is exactly as shown or it will not run.

Basically, #1 checks your hard drive for errors (mine had errors with reporting the true amount of free space), #2 checks and fixes (hopefully) problems with the recent windows update, and #3 checks your Windows files against what Microsoft thinks you should have on your PC and corrects any missing or wrong files. This may be overkill for most folks, but it is probably a good thing to run these items periodically, even if there are no (apparent) problems to help keep your WIn10 PC healthy.

I had a similar thing happen a few weeks ago, The first time it happened I was able to use a recent system restore points in the Win 10's diagnoses/repair state, which worked. A few days later, the exact same thing happened, but this time ALL the restore points were.. gone. I had no choice but to reformat, luckily the files were left in place (I had most files backed up anyway) but i was still a arduous process, reinstalling and resetting personal preferences.. I learned my lesson about having a having a disc image available.

Interesting you should say that. I'm about ready to wring Apple's neck with all the updates they now have. Security issues are degrading everything.

Mine has done this 3 times during 2017 trying to update to the CREATIVE SOMETHING WHATEVER update. Everytime, it disables my output to display port and I dont know how to get back in. After a couple resets, it says it failed, rolls itself back, only to try it all over again a few months later. I keep hoping they will get it right soon.

You will find lots of info about problems with this big update. Common threads, and a variety of different things. Good luck. I'm sure mine will be trying and failing again in the next couple months.

Rant: I'm personally sick and tired of the attitude that is prevalent nowadays - companies forcing updates and crippling software if the user doesn't go online and submit to spyware. The "Cloud" and "Edge" are touted as beneficial but given the current economic framework it 's almost exclusively about commoditising everything and everybody. A trend to resist.
