Windows 2000 does not support HDV capture

Has anyone successfully captured HDV with Windows 2000?

I've read the manual and many posts, but all talk about XP. I'm using the internal capture app, I've checked the cam is outputting HDV (without DV conversion). Windows only sees "Microsoft DV camera and VCR". The instructions about how to update the driver don't work for Windows 2000, the only other Sony driver I can find is "Sony 1394 CCM-DS250 Desktop Camera" which I don't think is right.

If I use the camera in HDV-DV downconvert mode, the external capture app works - well at least I can control the camera. But the captured footage is just noise - all "blocks", hardly recognizable. So I can't even work in DV mode.

I've raised a support ticket with Sony.... but hoping someone has cracked this.

In the meantime, you can download CapDVHS capture program (search google or this forum). I've used it quite a bit with my FX1 for HD.

Thanks, CapDVHS doesn't seem to work either. I think it is a Windows problem - something similar to the need to install drivers in XP with SP1.... but those instructions/drivers don't work for Windows 2000. Sony Vegas has a knowledge base item about this, but again it is XP only.

Am I the first person to try and capture HDV with Windows 2000?

I've seen lots of posts about installing drivers in XP, such as
This one

But I don't have a "AV/C subunit" showing under devices, and I can't get to such a dialog to add a driver.

Very depressing to have got a new HDV camcorder only to find I can't capture with it. I had not seen anything which warned me that HDV capture won't work with Windows 2000.

I don't have a reply from Sony yet, but from searching the web it seems to be the case that Windows 2000 does NOT support HDV capture.

While I'm not happy about that, I can understand it technically at least... the Microsoft just didn't add the drivers to Windows 2000.

But I don't understand why the HDV-DV downconversion is captured as "garbage"... surely this should look like DV to the PC (and I can edit DV fine).

I found a post (in French) of someone with the same problem... he/she also has the same problem when using the downconversion... that image shown which he describes as "mosaique", that's what I get when I use the downconversion...The post seems to think that is also a Windows 2000 problem? (I did a google translate).

French link with same problem

I need to keep Windows 2000 on the machine for my day job... so I guess I will need to try and install XP in a dual boot config (can't buy another PC at this point).

I think the Vegas documentation should make it clear that HDV capture isn't supported under Windows 2000. I can't find any mention of this.

Windows XP Service Pak 2 required for HDV

That shown, I have seen HDV converted to SD in camera successfully captured on Win2K, so whatever the problem is would suggest it's system-specific, somehow.

So it does say that... Ugh. I think I saw that and thought it meant that if you have XP you need SP2, not that it ONLY works with XP....

I'll give up trying to capture HDV with Windows 2000 then, and try and figure out why the downconversion doesn't work.

And also get myself a copy of XP.

Just to finish this story - I got myself XP and installed it (in a dual boot config, so I could keep Windows 2000 as well). Under XP, the HC1 is recognized automatically, and Vegas works fine. Gearshift also works better too (under Windows 2000 it kinda works, but tends to lose its skin and be hard to read).

Actually I like this dual boot config - I have lots of stuff installed/running on Windows 2000, I'm going to try and keep this XP installation lean and clean, and just use it for editing.

Has anyone successfully captured DV from Sony HDR-HC1 using Vegas 5 on Windows 2000?

This might provide some insight for you on capturing HDV on Win2K.

http://hdvforever.com/hdv/hdrhc1/freecapture/default.htm

it recommends using the Panasonic DVHS driver for older operating systems.

Interesting.... I searched long and hard and could not find anyone who had HDV capture working with Windows 2000. And the Vegas documentation says XP is required for HDV.. so I gave up and installed XP.

If I get a chance I'll try this driver... though I really don't need it any longer as I now have XP.
