I assume you are moving from XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. I think if you also increase your ram to 8 GB or more you will see some improvement. Windows 7 64 bit will be able to address more than 3.2 GB but with 4 only GB on board you will be limited to 1 GB per core.

Are you having issues with AVCHD editing? More RAM helps some, but not a dramatic improvement like you're looking for.

I know you said you had a quad, but which chip and how fast is your system?

As mentioned above you will experience an improvement to some degree. I myself, when I upgraded to a Quad Core, Win 7 64bit even with 4 GB I saw an improvement. I decided to upgrade to 8 GB, which I am glad I did, it was a less evident improvement in peformance.

Adding ram WILL give you dramatic improvement IF your system is paging out to disk. With a quad core with only 4GB of ram and if you run multiple instances of Vegas, or have other programs running, you are likely to be paging out to disk.You can check whether you are paging on your system by bring up task manager in win 7.

You will also find that if you are editing AVCHD you will want to use ram preview more often. By adding ram you will be able to allocate enough to the Vegas ram preview to see more than a few seconds at a time.

My chip is Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz

My problem is that I get calls for content with only an hour or 2 for delivery so I need to speed up where I can.
Obviously someone on the other side is waiting till the last minute but work is work.

Is there any reason for me not to upgrade to windows 7 and 64bit .what can go wrong with Vegas 09e and 64 bit?
For example pugins not working, veg files not opening etc

At present I have over 40 active Veg files or projects I am working on so if I hit a snag it will be hassle

There's no reason to avoid Windows 7 with Vegas - it works very well with Vegas. If you need faster rendering a better move might be to upgrade to an i7 processer with an unlocked multiplier. Processor speed is what drives rendering time much more so than anything else in a computer. A top of the line i7 (6core) set up well might save you as much as 40% off your rendering time as compared to your current system depending on your file format.

I second what srode says, especially if you expect to be receiving AVCHD. I believe you are in South Africa and I'm not sure how widely AVCHD is used there but it is being used here in Raleigh NC by an increasing number of the TV news stations.

Re Windows 7 64, you will not be able to use 32 bit plugins in Vegas 64 but Vegas 32 will run in Windows 7 64, and it will allow you to use your plugins.

To sum up.

First check if your motherboard is actually a 64bit board otherwise you wont be able to install the 64bit Windows. I suspect it is because you are running a quad core, but check.

Also be aware that Win7 has different version options from Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. Home Premium can address upto 16GB of memory and Ultimate upto 192GB.

Notice on this link the Win7 32bit all limited 4GB

If you have installed Win7 64bit you can still install 32bit apps like Vegas, Bluff, Particle Illusion.....etc, and will still work perfectly.
