Vegas Plat has not been tested with Win7. It's not an officially supported OS. So if you are getting crashes, I am afraid you are on your own. You will have to decide if a shiny new OS, or your video editor (and other apps) are more important for you in your daily life, and act accordingly.

There are quite a few people running Vegas on WIn7-64. Check this thread for an important fix. My guess is it is needed for any 64-bit OS.

I am having exactly the same problem, sam6.

I was able to run MS 9 Premium just fine on Vista 64, but since upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit I have been able to install it and run it, but after shutting down my computer, the next time I start up I get the same message you have:

"Vegas movie studio has stopped working ...."

Actually Sony does claim Windows 7 compatibility. See the system requirements page.

I am having the same issue though it only occurs when rendering AVC files. I think that this is because of other issues documented on these forums with 64bit versions of Windows.

You can modify some DLLs with some special software, but I am holding off on that hoping that a patch will be released soon.

If that's the case then it's a bug, and Sony should be notified. Not much we can do here about this.

Thanks everyone for your help. Birk you referred to a fix that was helpful, giving me a thread address but not a specific web site to access such a fix. I have downloaded the update on Sony Vegas' web site which appears to be only for build 92 that I already had.

Excuse my ignorance but can you lead me to the fix site you refer to.

The first message in this thread explains the problem & fix:

Here is the link to DL the required utility program:

http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php

ON my system the files to tweak are in the m2tsplg folder located in the Vegas FIleIO Plug-Ins folder.

It works!!!!!!!!!!

I had some problems at first, because I couldn't save it as the same file name. However, I achieved a workaround. I deleted the Vegas Movie Studio icon from my desktop, and I turned off all user controls in the Control Panel so that it wouldn't give me a warning of any file changes. I was then able to make all of the changes to the necessary files. For me:

VegasMovieStudioPE90.exe in the main folder

In the FileIO Plug-Ins older, there's a sub-directory called m2tsplug. In there are the other files you'll need to change:

m2tsplug.dll
mcstdh264dec.dll
sonymvd2pro_xp.dll

All done, started up Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 in Win 7 64-bit, and it worked!!

Hope this helps someone.

Ok, cancel that. It stopped working again.

I've checked all of the files referred to in blink3times post:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=671862

... and my files are all checked for "App can handle >2GB address space".

So that solution wasn't effective for me, even though it worked once after immediately making the changes. Now I still get the message:

"Vegas Movie Studio Platinum has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Any other thoughts?

I'm just guessing but I'd take a look at how much RAM your system has, what the size of your paging file is, how fragmented your disk is. In other words, my guess is your problem is memory related.

Another tweak I've read about that has helped some folks (though I have no idea why) is to set the number of threads Vegas uses to 1. This has meaning only if you have a multi-core CPU chip in your PC. I think the Vegas default is 4 (for quad-core CPU's) and in my case I raised it to 8 (because my system has an Intel i7 with 8 processors) but, as I said, I have read where limiting Vegas to a single thread has helped some folks get it working OK.

I have experienced the same problem rendering in Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack version 9.0b. The project is approx. 2 min 44 sec and the crash comes after approx 2 min 23 sec. Tried 3 times ... same result although the point of crash was not always identical.

Tried e-mail support and got a reply that support is not available for Windows 7. How crazy is that?

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on a quad 4 machine which does just fine on the trial version of Vegas Pro 9.
Eugenia wrote on 11/14/2009, 5:15 PM
Vegas Pro 9 is based on a newer codebase than Platinum 9 and so it's better tested for 64bit/newer OSes. As for Platinum not working properly on Win7 is kind of normal, since it's a different OS. A video editor is a complex app, and so even small changes to the kernel and media APIs can cause havoc. And no matter what Sony says, I don't believe the Platinum codebase was extensively tested on Win7.
D in Brisbane wrote on 11/15/2009, 2:20 PM
Birk Binnard,

I guess it could be hardware related, although when it comes to RAM I've got 6GB, and it's a pretty new system (Core i7). The disk shouldn't be too fragmented.

How do you change the number of threads Vegas uses? I might give that a try.
Birk Binnard wrote on 11/16/2009, 10:55 PM
My system is Vista-64 with 6GB RAM and with the 64-bit fixes installed I run Vegas 9b with no problems at all. I render most everything at full 1920x1080HS with 5.1 surround sound and my render times a about 4x real time. I do render onto a second dedicated 1TB SATA hard drive.

There is a trick to changing the # threads Vegas uses. Here are the steps:

1. Start Vegas
2. Hold down the Shift key and click Options/Preferences.
3. The Preferences window will appear with a new tab called Internal. Click this tab.
4. In the box "Show only prefs containing" type threads
5. For an i7 type 8 in the Value col. of Max Video Render Threads
6. Click OK. Close Vegas and restart it. (This saves your change.)
7. Click Options/Preferences and click the Preferences tab
8. Set Max number of rendering threads to 8 (or whatever number you want.)
9. Close and restart Vegas

8 tells Vegas to use all available processors. This is what I use and have never had a problem. But other people have reported reducing it to 1 solves some crashes. They may or may not have been running in i7's. I guess you'll just have to experiment.
burgmanguy wrote on 11/17/2009, 10:16 AM
Please explain "the 64-bit fixes". You are running Vista but this is a thread on Windows 7-64bit.

I followed your solution (treads = 8) and tried to render my 2min, 44 sec video (Quad 4, 5g ram). It seemed to render the video to "completed" but the rendered wmv file was never actually produced. No error message appeared.

Birk Binnard wrote on 11/18/2009, 9:09 AM
As I noted in an earlier post, the 64-bit fixes are described at length in this thread:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=671862

I sure wish Sony would make this a sticky. This fix works for both Vista & Win7.
D in Brisbane wrote on 11/18/2009, 2:01 PM
I made the 64-bit fixes to Vegas Movie Studio, but I'm still not able to get it working in Windows 7 64.

I've also downloaded a trial version of Vegas Pro 64-bit, and it works perfectly. Everything seems great with that, so I didn't think it's an issue with my particular system. For me, at least, there is a problem with Vegas Movie Studio. If Sony can release an update for Movie Studio as soon as possible that would be great.

I wonder if this has something to do with the upgrade from Vista to W7? As opposed to starting with W7. Sam, did you upgarde Vista, or start with W7 from scratch?
andrew-ritter wrote on 11/19/2009, 7:04 PM
I did a clean install of Win7 64 several days ago. So far no problems with editing in Vegas Platinum 9. I haven't tried rendering yet. I had Vista 64 on this computer but decided against doing an upgrade. The clean install left me with over 25 gb of Windows.old files which I've deleted, but it wasn't easy to get rid of them.
