Windows Explorer crashes on .mpg's

Hello
I have a new Mac Pro running Bootcamp and Windows XP SP3 original install.
I rendered some MPEG2 files for a DVD using Vegas 8.0c.
When I tried to move the files in Windows Explorer it froze as soon as I clicked on any of these files but I could select them in my DVD burner (Record Now DX) and Vegas and they played after the render using VLC Player I think. They seem to work in a Dialog Box but not in WE. Other files did not cause it to freeze.
When I made a DVD-ROM and moved the files to a Windows PC running XP SP2 I had no problem with them.
I Googled the problem and I am not the first person to experience this and it is not exclusive to the Mac or Bootcamp.
It can also affect .avi's and .mpg's from other sources.
I do not yet have the definitive cure but some say to add a codec pack and there is a registry hack which will stop it happening.
It seems it may be a codec issue. I also have Power DVD 4 DVD Workshop 2 and VLC Player 0.9.4 on the same machine.
Have any of the wise heads here got experience of this problem and know of the correct cure?
Thanks
Malcolm
