Windows Me

I posted a thread a while ago about my computer, as I am having problems with the sound freezing while printing to tape. I've swapped the firewire card to another computer (the other computer only had half the memory and half the processin power) and it worked fine. I've asked a couple of my friend (computer wizzes) what the problem might be, and they both reckon without a doubt it's because I've got windows Me installed on the computer. This seems to be the only other option.

Any thoughts?

System:
1.2GHz CPU
256MB RAM
20GB Hard drive
Windows Me

Try running scandisk in standard mode (NOT THOROUGH). If at the end Scandisk says "it found errors and fixed them all" then restart your computer and try again. If not, Defrag your harddrive. Everytime I have problems with any software crashing on my system it's almost 9 times out of 10 it just needs a little maintainence.

no....
tried all that. this problem goes beyond the video camera. It has been crashing like this since I've had it (about 4 months ago). The computer technician reckons there's nothing wrong with it, but there is. I'm just wondering if windows Me might be it. From what my friends said, there is a general dislike of windows Me (plus what was said on a thread I started previously).

Mickey,

I believe I suggested the removal of Win ME back in that original post. If it's an option for you, maybe a clean install of Win 98SE is the way to go. You also might be able to get away with Win2000 if you added a bit more RAM.

Cheers,

All of my techie pals and i thoroughly agree that 98SE is a huge UPgrade over ME ;) I've encountered dozens of users who's computers came preloaded with ME and they all had massive problems. We UPgraded them to 98SE and all problems disappeared.

Yeah, 2K is better than 98SE, but 98SE is a heck of a lot cheaper, considering that most people out there own a license for it already.

Chein/Mickey,

Isn't that wild? Win98SE is a great upgrade over ME especially where audio is concerned. I used 98SE for a long while. Never had a problem with it.

Windows 2000 is my premium choice right due to the fact it doesn't have all the crap that XP loads onto the hard disk. Clean and no frills O/S = very stable DAW

Cheers,

I agree with CuzinB. Window's 2000 and Window's XP are rock solid. I run XP home, and have been delighted with the stability, although I take issue with Microsoft keeping track of how many times I install it and what hardware I use, but that's a completely different thread.

If it's stability you are after, I'd so go after one of these 2 routes.
