Windows Media Codec Missing

I attempted to render a 7 minute clip into Windows Media Video V9 today and got the following message:

"The required Windows Media video codec is not installed"

This is a surprise because I've used it before. Can anyone suggest a fix please.

Is there a file missing? Can I obtain a download from somewhere perhaps?

I'm running Movie Studio 4 (Build 48).

Use the internet web connection in Media Player to download the latest codecs of which there are a ton. Microsoft no longer supplies the Indeo Ligos codecs with SP1 and SP2.

I downloaded and installed the Windows Media codec which appeared to do everything right but still no joy. Any body got any other suggestions?

What is the name of the template you are using for your WMV renders?

If you are using a template that uses the Windows Media Audio Pro codec for audio, you won't be able to use the template. That codec is for 5.1 and/or 24 bit audio, neither of which are supported by Movie Studio.

I've tried most of the templates but the one I wanted to use was 100Kbps Video (or perhaps 256Kbps).

Here's what happens in detail:

Click on Make Movie button
Select Save it to your hard drive
Click Next
Select file path to suit project
Format set to Windows Media Video V9 (*.wmv)
Template set to 100Kbps Video
Click NEXT

It then looks like it is starting to render but stops almost immediately with the following message:

An error occurred while creating the media file
The required Windows Media video codec is not installed.

As I said in my first post, I have successfully rendered to *.wmv before which is why I wonder: a) is there a file damaged or deleted from my PC, or b) an initialisation file corrupt. The problem is that I have no idea where to look to check for either.

BTW it renders Mpeg, *.avi and Real Media without any problem

It has just occurred to me. Is it possible that Windows has done an auto update and replaced my codec with a newer, incompatible one?

If so, can anybody tell me what should be installed and how to get it and install it?

Since you have successfully rendered to wmv before, if you have any of these files around, do they play OK in the Windows Media Player?


What version of Windows Media Player do you have? You may want to try installing WMP10 if you don't have it already.

Hi,

Yes the previously rendered files play OK in WMP.

I have just checked the version of WMP and, to my surprise, it is version 10 (Version 10.00.00.3646). I don't remember installing that!

So far, I haven't been able to reproduce your problem. I'm running VMS 4.0a build 48 on WinXP SP2 with WMP 10.00.00.3646 installed. I tried both the 100 Kbps and 256 Kbps templates and they rendered just fine.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Movie Studio 4?

I had considered that but I am new to this and I am at a crucial stage in a project.

Basically, I'm afraid that I will wreck the project so I will try that after my client gives final approval and I can do the final render and then I will try a re-install.

BTW, Since this problem started, I have tried installing the WMP Encoder which comes up with the same error message. I am beginning to suspect a registry problem.
