Windows Media Player can't play my very first AVI

Hi! Brand new convert to Vegas, just did the tutorial and rendered it to avi, only to get the following obscure error message in Windows Media Player 7.01: "No error description could be found for this error. (Error code = 0x800A017F)". Any suggestions? When I render using the Indeo Video 5.04 codec instead of the default NTSC DV, it works fine.

Thanks in advance,
- Frank

Dunno. Can you play _any_ DV file in WMP7 (e.g. the capture)? Can you play it in WMP6 (mplayer2.exe)?

Thanks for the hints. WMP7 could only play AVI files from other sources - not my captures. Same with WMP6. So I reinstalled the capture software (Pinnacle Systems DV200 - I've had a lot of trouble with the DV200/Premiere combo, may have uninstalled something essential in my eagerness to move to Vegas, which seems as rock solid as Premiere is buggy). Now WMP6 plays everything, while WMP7 opens everything but only plays audio, no video. Obviously I need to learn how my capture files are affected by Pinnacle software - do they rely on any Pinnacle codecs maybe? Will that make my rendered movies unviewable by others who don't have these codecs installed on their own computers?

I admit to total ignorance of what the DV200 may be capturing, but http://videobuyersguide.com/Codecs/Type1-Type2-DV.html - especially the last paragraph - may shed some light on it.

Since the DV200 includes a regular OHCI card, have you tried simply capturing with VV3?

Anyway, once rendered to a progressive codec such as .wmv or laid back to tape everybody else should be able to view them just fine. You wouldn't normally send anyone a DV .avi anyway.

Thanks for that link - it does indeed help me understand what's going on at each stage of the game.

I actually have one of the earlier, non-OHCI compliant DV200 cards. I'll probably be getting something like an ADS Pyro before long, because I would prefer capturing through VV3 - I'm not crazy about Pinnacle's capture software.

Glad to hear it, thanks.
