Windows Movie Mkr vs Vegas Pro

This is just a curiosity. I tried capturing DV video using Windows movie maker on a computer without Vegas Pro. The avi file plays fine in Windows movie maker, WIndows Media player, Real player, but when load it into Vegas Pro, the audio is missing, with only the video track showing. If I move the clip to the trimmer, the vido show up in the audio window. Thus no sound. I tried it again capturing it to Windows movie maker on the same computer as Vegas Pro with the same results. Apparently there can be different types of avi files, which makes me concerned that not all avi material I might want to use will be compatable with Vegas Pro. Any help or enlightenment?

Windows Movie Maker captures AVI Type 1 files and Vegas only deals with AVI Type 2 files. This is not to be confused with an AVI2 files, which gets past the AVI 2GB file size limit. See this Wikipedia entry for a better explanation:

Also, AVI is just a wrapper. You can stick anything in there... kind of like candy on grocery store shelf. You got your jujubees, your sixlets, your charleston chews. All of them are in wrappers but all of them contain something different. AVI files are the same in a sweet sort of way. :)

P.S. Not that I'm eating a candy bar right now or anything.

DV-AVI files captured in WMM do not meet the accepted standards, possibly on purpose. The other option, capturing as WMV, also creates an inferior file, for viewing mainly in Windows Media Player.

Your best bet is to capture in Vegas' built in utility, or in Scenealyzer. If you capture in the utility that came with your camcorder, beware of any options that re-encode your video to something other than its native format.

Thanks everybody. You learn something new every day. But thanks to jrazz, I'm now going to go get a candy bar.
