Windows Progressive WMV Codec

I use this codec when I stabilize in Mercalli ProDad, but neither Movie Studio 13 or Photoshop CC13 will open it unless I use "open with" from within Adobe Bridge. Once I open one this way, for the rest of the editing session I can open other WMV files. Any Ideas why this works? Any suggestions how to fix it so I can open Progressive WMV in Studio without the work-a-round?

There are much better codecs for rendering intermediates.
WMV is an obsolete, lossy delivery codec.
What else is available in mercalli?

MPEG 2 MPEG 4 but the codecs I have top out at 20 myb. If I knew where to get codecs and how to install them it would probably recognized them I think.
