WM9 2nd pass slow as heck! ????

Has anyone from Sofo/Sony ever figured out why the second pass of the encoding with WM9 takes so much longer than the first pass? During the first pass, the frames go pretty fast, but during the second pass, the frames increase in spurts of 30, then hesistates, then another 30, etc...

When using Windows Encoder, I get the same frame rate on the second pass that I do the first. Why?

Define what you mean my 'second pass'.

When using two pass encoding. 2nd pass is when the actual encoding takes place. The first pass is the analyzing phase.

WM9 is usually slow from what I've found. My AVI + MPEG renders fly, but the WMV goes extremely slow.

But I cant understand why it is so slow in VV4 when Windows Encoder flies. Even Premiere Pro goes faster than VV4.

The spurts of 30 frames might be related to "seconds per keyframe " or project framerate. However, I don't think changing the former would save you any time.

I thought that's what you meant. I just did a little test. A one minute 30 second test using WM9 2 pass at 1 M bitrate... took 2 minutes 58 seconds. Roughtly two to one which is excellent rendering time.

Did you happen to test it in Windows Media Encoder and see how fast it went with it?
