WMV 9 encoding...disappointed

When I encode something in wm9v using vv4, its slower than ever. MS' Encoder 9 encodes the file almost 4x faster though I used to think it was because I changed the quality switch in WM9 encoder. However, I just bought Premiere Pro and compared the render times b/t PP and VV4 and VV4 is 4 times slower encoding not to mention PP had better quality.

Why does VV$ when encoding WMV9 encode frames in spurts as opposed to straight through. Let me give an example to make it clearer. When I encode in wm9 encoder it encodes frames 1,2,3,4,5,....27,28,29,30,31,32. But in VV4 it encodes 1,2,3,4,5,....27,28,29,30 PAUSE PAUSE 30,31,32,33 etc...

I have disabled smart resample with very little speed increase.

I have a P4 2.4GHz with 512MB Ram.

I agree, when I am going to have the final product a .wmv file I usually render out of vegas to a AVI DV file then I use the Windoes Media Encoder to do the final encode. It usually goes a lot faster and the end result usually looks a little better.

I do the same & agree.

i just rendered a slideshow with pans & crops to wmv and some of the pictures had a red line on top or bottom. it didn't happen to most of them though. i found this a little strange.

After reading the first post, I downloaded WM Encoder and tested a 15 second AVI clip between Vegas and WME. I agree, even at various settings WME is faster, and the quality is noticably higher. I don't know if this is true for all types of video at all settings, but it certainly is for my source material. This tip came just in time for me...I'm creating video clips for a medical Powerpoint presentation and the imported clips need to be in WM9 format.

thanks,
Kevin.

What is your CPU % utilization when encoding? When encoding just audio (WMA) my CPU never goes above 8-10% while for MP3's it is close to 100% and the elapsed time is much shorter.

Try turning off the general pref "Show progress in Video Preview window while rendering". It's possible that the updating of this window is why you're seeing that pause.

What is your setting for Project Properties | Video tab | Full-resolution rendering quality? In most cases Good should be sufficient. Choosing Best can greatly affect your rendering times.

N.B. If you click the ? next to the close box in the Project Properties window, then click on a control (such as the full-res render quality dropdown), you'll get a quick rundown of what it is for and usually some helpful suggestions for settings to use.

Well if YOU'D have tried turning off the general pref "Show progress in Video Preview window while rendering" before posting I'm sure that you too would have discovered that it makes NO DAMNED DIFFERENCE!!

Come on Sonic, I expect us mortals to have to use trial and error but I expected more of the people who created it!!

I've tried DOZENS of settings combinations and get the same result regardless - a big pause at the end of each frame (in my case every 25 as I'm using PAL).

Any chance of a more CONSTRUCTIVE suggestion??
