WMV Render Problems - Skin Tones

Melsworld wrote on 5/3/2006, 3:21 PM
Hi,

Have an AVI file with which has a lot of skin tones in

When rendering this for Architect and subsequently burning the DVD the skin tones look fine

When rendering it as a WMV file the skin tones have an orange to sunburnt look to them and the overall picture is darker when played
back through Windows Media Player

Any ideas what may be causing this, or how I can overcome this problem?

Thanks Mel

Check the video controls in Windows Media Player. Maybe they've been set darker than normal. What does your .wmv file look like in Vegas' preview window?

Thanks for the reply,

The preview looks fine

To be honest I did not even know that you could change the settings
in the media player - just shows how much I use windows media player

Tweaking the controls solved the problem, I guess the only other thing to worry about is other users who get this wmv file having their settings set differently and think the wmv file is of poor quality, still I guess that I cannot be all things to all people

Thanks for the tip

Sounds like something other than Media Player. If you didn't realize that you could adjust the MP's settings, that means it was set at the factory default. Therefore, there shouldn't be any difference, especially if the flesh tones look good in your Vegas preview window... on the same monitor, right?

The default settings in Media Player seem to be for orange skin tones and the controls (at least on my installation) are very sensitive (a small shift has significant effect on skin tones). Perhaps set up for sun-starved skins in Seattle.

You need to color correct it:

Try the "Studio RGB to Computer RGB" preset for starters.

Hi Jay,

Yes I am also begining to wonder about that as well

Yes and it is on the same monitor

When I did adjust the Saturation on the media player it was a minus shift of around -20 to get th tones looking close to the vegas preview

Puzzling

Hi John,

So are you saying leave the settings as they are for the DVD creation and then re save the veg file and then try the

"Try the "Studio RGB to Computer RGB" preset for starters."

to improve the the wmv render?

I will certainley give it a go but what I really cannot understand is why the skin tones on the media player are so different from the vegas preview, is it possible that the media player is that far adrift from reality?

Sensitive - you are right there even a small shift on contrast changes things dramatically!

I had a huge problem with the Media Player defaults and an older ATI video card in Win2k. This should not happen.
